  • Lauren Elizabeth Ladd of Kingston is among the 44 young women from throughout East Tennessee who will be presented during the Dogwood Ball.

    The 51st annual ball of the East Tennessee Presentation Society will be on April 20 in Knoxville Coliseum.

    Ladd, a graduate of Roane County High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Zane Ladd of Kingston.

    She attends the University of Tennessee at Knoxville.

  • Roane County’s Southern Appalachia Railway Museum will have narrated one-hour spring colors trips and a Murder Mystery dinner train this month.

    The spring colors trips will depart at 11 a.m., 1  and 3 p.m. on April 6 and 20. Tickets are $19 for adults, $15 for ages 3-12.  

    Reservations are suggested and can be made by calling the museum at 865-241-2140.

    During the rides, a short narrative will describe the historic Manhattan Project and the historical significance of the railroad serving it.

  • Ida Kendrick will celebrate her 100th birthday on May 28.

    She plans to celebrate with her daughter, Joyce Lemons of Rockwood, and her nieces and nephews.

    They plan to honor her big day with a special luncheon in Rockwood Street Grill in downtown Rockwood.

    Kendrick is the only surviving child from a family of 11 children.

    She was born in President Woodrow Wilson’s first administration.

  • Ava Barber, a featured performer on “The Lawrence Welk Show,” will be the guest performer next week during the meeting of Kingston First Baptist Church’s Young at Heart.

    The meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. April 1 in the church’s family life center at 215 N. Kentucky St.

    The program is open to the public. Those attending are asked to bring a covered dish or dessert for the meal afterward.

    • Swan Pond United Methodist Church, Harriman, will present its annual Good Friday “service of darkness” beginning at 6 p.m. The Rev. Brenda Poole will conduct the service. The church is at 1317 Swan Pond Road. Call Pool at 660-2102 for details.

    I came to Bethel Presbyterian Church as pastor nearly two years ago, in the middle of Lent.

    The church was somewhat still in transition, having just had an interim pastor, and so Lenten practices were minimal.

    Last year, we went back to previous practices of a special Lenten Bible study and Save Our Saturday mission events.

  • Edith Nance celebrates her 95th birthday today, March 27.

    She was honored by her family and friends with a birthday celebration on March 24 in Bradbury Community Center.

    Nance is the mother of four: Patsy Nance, Larry Nance, Danny Nance and the late Gloria Miller.

    She has a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

  • Siblings Maggie Rose Richardson and Payton Madox "Max" Richardson both celebrated their birthdays on March 8.

    Maggie turned 5 on March 8 and celebrated with a Cinderella-themed party. Max, who turned 7 on March 8, had a Mario-themed party.

    They are the children of Cliff and Shauna Richardson.

    Grandparents are Jack and Diane Woolum of Kingston, the late Jerry D. Richardson, and Michael and Kay Griffith of North Carolina.
