    The completion of the walkway around Kingston’s lakefront was in sight. The state moved the guard rail on the dike closer to the highway, making room for the walkway to be built behind it on the lakeside. The Kingston Parks and Recreation Commission voted to spend up to $3,000 for materials to extend the walkway across the dike.

  • Knights of Columbus representatives from Father Callahan Council 8273, Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Harriman, present checks totaling $7,047 to the Michael Dunn Center.

  • The Celtic rock band Coyote Run will be featured during the all-day International Festival Feb. 19 at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge.

    Showcasing the world’s cultures, the festival will include entertainment, food, booths, crafts and children’s activities in the Oak Ridge Children’s Museum at 461 West Outer Drive.

    Song, dance and music of the world will entertain children and adults alike at the family-friendly festival from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with food served between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.

  • The city of Oak Ridge will have a rabies shot and microchip clinic for dogs and cats on Feb. 26.

    The event will be in the Oak Ridge Animal Shelter at 395 Belgrade Road from noon to 5 p.m.

    Rabies shots are required yearly of all domestic animals in Tennessee. Microchip identification products assist in the quick and efficient return of pets to their owners.

    “City staff members are trained to scan every animal that comes into the shelter as an attempt to locate a rightful owner,” said Oak Ridge Police Sgt. Shannah Newman.

  • The Rev. George D. Young III of Fernandina Beach, Fla., was elected on Feb. 12 as the fourth bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of East Tennessee.  

    St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church in Harriman is one of more than 50  churches comprising this diocese.

    Young, 55, rector of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Fernandina Beach, was elected on the eighth ballot out of a field of five nominees.

    He received 107 votes of 142 cast in the lay order and 59 of 84 cast in the clergy order.

  • When Kingston resident Larry Gabbard sits down at the potter’s wheel, there’s no telling what might come of it.

    Each technique offers something different. Glaze, temperature and clay all play their parts in the methodical and creative process. The possibilities seem endless.

    Samples of his creativity are being featured at the Kingston Public Library through the rest of the month.

  • Reba “Granny” McCullough of Rockwood celebrated her 94th birthday on Feb. 11.

    She celebrated the special event with her family.

    She has a son, Freddie; three grandchildren, Dani, Jeri and Teresa; great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
     

  • Roane County 4-H Club members are in the midst of collecting supplies to be given to the American Red Cross.

    The supplies will be distributed across the state to youths affected by disaster.

    Supplies the public is encouraged to contribute include 3.5-ounce bar of soap, 2-ounce bottle of shampoo, youth-size toothbrush, .85-ounce toothpaste, washcloth, 5-inch comb, small pack crayons and activity/coloring book.

  • Glimpses of life into the African-American community of Scarboro is shown in a special exhibit on display through April at the American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge.

    “When you look at the pictures, personal items and hear the oral histories told by Scarboro High School graduates, you journey back in time to relive their experiences,” said Rose Weaver of Oak Ridge, collector of Scarboro memorabilia.
