  • Avery Trace DAR plans genealogy workshop

    Avery Trace Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution is anxious to share information to help members of the public trace their roots.

    The organization is planning a genealogy workshop on Feb. 26 in the clubhouse of Southwest Point Golf Club at 2002 Decatur Hwy., Kingston.

    Sign-in will begin at 9 a.m., with the workshop following from 9:30 to noon.

    Cost is $10 to cover instructional material.

    Refreshments will be served.

  • Harriman Lions perform student vision screenings

    Roane County Schools has a partnership with the Harriman Lions Club for the benefit of young students.

    More than 200 public school pre-K and kindergarten students who returned permission slips received free vision photoscreening as a service from Lions Club members.  

    The screening process is done with a special camera that enables specialists from the Eye Center at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital to see possible future eye problems.

    The screening process has an 85- to 90-percent accuracy rate.

  • Knox manufacturer supporting Camp Buck Toms shotgun range

    SportDOG Brand of Knoxville has extended its support of youth outdoor activities with a $50,000 donation to the Boy Scouts of America’s Great Smoky Mountain Council.

    The funds will be used for the construction of a shotgun range at Camp Buck Toms on Watts Bar Lake near Rockwood.

    Camp Buck Toms is host to 6,500 annual visitors who go to the 750-acre property for camping, swimming, boating, fishing, shooting and other family and scouting activities.

    • Bradbury United Methodist Church, Kingston, will have a special veterans celebration during the 11 a.m. service. Veterans will be honored; Col. Mike Charles will be the guest speaker.   • Harriman Memorial Day parade slated

    The city of Harriman will have a 2011 Memorial Day parade on May 28.

    The event will honor all military veterans who have served to protect U.S. It will extend the gratitude to all emergency service workers who have paid the ultimate price while protecting United States citizens.

    The parade will begin near Harriman High School on Roane Street, and extend to Harriman Riverfront Park along the banks of the Emory River.

    In case of rain, the parade will be postponed until May 29.

  • Mr. & Mrs. Ladd

    Tami Hamby and Steve Ladd were married on Jan. 1 in South Harriman Baptist Church.

    The Rev. Todd Dorsey officiated during the private ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of Tom and Patsy Hamby of Harriman and the late Glenda Hamby.

    The groom is the son of R.W. and Edith Ladd of Harriman.

    A reception dinner at Lakeside Tavern in Knoxville followed the ceremony.

    After a wedding trip to the Caribbean, the couple is at home in Roane County.

  • Conservation program signup starts March 14

    A general signup for the USDA’s Conservation Reserve Program will run from March 14-April 15.

    During the signup period, farmers and ranchers may offer eligible land for CRP’s competitive general signup at the Roane/Loudon Farm Service Agency office at at 424 N. Kentucky St., Kingston.

  • Salvation Army honors Young for years of service

    The Roane/Morgan County Salvation Army Unit recently honored Jim Young of Kingston for his years of public service in the organization.

    Young is moving from the area and will be resigning from the board.

    His attention to the plight of others started when he was a young man. He attended Emory and Henry University in Atlanta and participated in the early fight against segregation by organizing and participating in marches.

  • Taylor Ann Smith

    Taylor Ann Smith turned 4 years old on Nov. 21.

    She celebrated with a Pinkalicious party.

    She is the daughter of Will and Kristy Smith of Harriman.

    Grandparents are Steve and Mona Bolden of Harriman and Diane Smith of Oakdale.

    Taylor has a 2 1/2-year-old brother, Liam.
