    TVA employees are providing food, gifts and other donations to children and families in need across the TVA service area this holiday season.
    Kingston Fossil Plant employees gave food boxes to 24 families of children at Dyllis Elementary School near Harriman.
    The staff at Bull Run Fossil Plant provided gifts for 32 children at Claxton Elementary School in Powell and delivered food baskets to 25 families.

  • Free beginning bridge class for seniors offered in OR

    Oak Ridge Senior Center is kicking off the new year by offering a free beginning bridge class for senior citizens.

    The eight-week class will start on Jan. 5 in Oak Ridge Senior Center at 728 Emory Valley Road.

    The class will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. each Wednesday.

    Seniors of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.

    A general knowledge of how to play other card games is required.

    25 Years Ago
    Operation REACH collected $5,693, its largest amount to date. That amount allowed 130 children to buy Christmas presents for their families. Each child had a $50 budget. (In 2010, the REACH goal was $125,000 to help 500 children.)

    Kingston Parks and Recreation Department purchased about $15,000 worth of new equipment for children who play at Kingston City Park. The new equipment, designed primarily for 5- to 8-year-olds, will replace equipment that was becoming a safety concern.

  • Climate change to be focus at Lunch With the League

    T.J. Blasing of Oak Ridge National Laboratory will discuss “Climate Change: Its Ethical and Economic Issues” during the next Lunch with the League on Jan. 4.  

    Oak Ridge League of Women Voters has the twice-monthly event in Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike, Oak Ridge.

    Lunch begins at 11:45 a.m. and is available on a first-come, first-served basis for $6.

    The program starts at noon.

  • Wise investment for Eagle promotes fitness

    Avid joggers frequenting the trail winding around Watts Bar Lake in Kingston may have noticed
    some recent additions at the foot of Fort Southwest Point.

    Coordinating with both the Tennessee Valley Authority and Kingston Parks and Recreation Department, Chip Wise of Boy Scout Troop 101 has struck a formidable effort to earn the rank of Eagle Scout by constructing three exercise stations along the walking trail.

  • Give blood, go to a flick for free

    Medic Regional Blood Center is  sweetening the pot for donors heading into the New Year’s holiday in hopes of increasing the area’s blood supply.  

    Donors who stop by Kingston United Methodist Church from 2 to 8 p.m. Dec. 29 to give blood will receive a free ticket good for a number of Knoxville-area movie theaters.  

    Medic will be set up for this special blood drive inside the church’s fellowship hall.

    Brownie Troop 260 of Emory Heights School, led by Georgia Oran, participated in a Pledge of Peace ceremony. Each of the 11 troop members told how they might bring peace to the world and then signed a Pledge of Peace, which was to be carried into space with Christa McAuliffe, the teacher astronaut on the Challenger space shuttle, in January 1986.

  • Isabella Shae Turner

    Isabella Shae Turner turned 5 years old on Nov. 3.

    She celebrated on Oct. 30 with a Tinkerbell skating party with relatives and friends.

    She is the daughter of Ethan and Patricia Turner.

    Grandparents are Gladys and Paul Powers of Harriman, Susan Turner of Kingston and Ralph Turner of Squamish, British Columbia.

    Great-grandparents are the late Clarence and Betty Nielsen and the late Paul and Annie Tate.

    Isabella has a 7-year-old sister, Blaklee.
