    Harriman Paperboard Corp. closed operations, leaving 150 employees jobless. Close to 100 people whose livelihoods indirectly depended on the plant were also unemployed. Harriman and HUB officials were caught off-
    guard by the closure and left to wonder about the likelihood of getting back close to $3 million the company owed them.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Nathan E. Shaw

    U.S. Army Pfc. Nathan E. Shaw has graduated from the H-8 Tracked Vehicle Recovery Specialist Course at Fort Knox, Ky.

    He is married to Crystal Jones Shaw, daughter of Terry J. and Debra S. Jones of Oliver Springs.

    The course is designed to train students in the skills and knowledge needed to perform recovery operations using the M88A1/A2 tracked recovery vehicle.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Scott W. Collins

    Scott W. Collins has been promoted to the rank of chief master sergeant in the U.S. Air Force.

    Collins, son of Ray and Shirley Collins of Oakdale, is a weapons systems branch superintendent assigned to the 1st Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Fort Walton Beach, Fla.  

    The sergeant has served in the military for 24 years.

    His sisters are Vicki McCullough of Harriman and Ginger Mitchell of Knoxville.

    His wife, Christine, is the daughter of Gregory and Maryellen Pelkey of Leesburg, Fla.

  • Deanna Nicole Stooksbury

    Deanna Nicole Stooksbury was born on Sept. 29 in Methodist Medical Center, Oak Ridge.

    She weighed 8 pounds and was 20.5 inches long.

    She is the daughter of Freddy and Terry Stooksbury of Rockwood.

    Grandparents are Don and Donna Fickey and Tim and Wanda Martin.

  • Library holds book sale

    Oliver Springs Public Library is growing needs help.

    As it makes room for newer collections, it must weed out older books that are no longer being checked out. The library is selling those books at low prices.  

    On Friday, Nov. 12, the library will be selling hardback books for $1 and paperbacks for 50 cents. It also welcomes donations for specific books to be added to our collection.  

    The library is housed in the train depot, built in 1905, along with the historical museum and caboose.

  • RSCC, Chattanooga State team up for concert

    The Roane State Community College Music Department will present Requiem by Gabriel Fauré on Saturday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. at First Baptist Church in Kingston.

    The Roane State Concert Choir and the Chattanooga State Community College Concert Choir are teaming up for the performance.

    A $10 donation is suggested.

    The concert will feature Edie Johnson, organ; Fred Pogue, piano; Mary Ann Fennell, violin; Charles Barber, baritone; and Amanda Peavyhouse, soprano.

  • Stansbury’s pencil drawing wins over viewers at ’10 Country Fair

    Jesse Stansbury’s pencil drawing was voted Viewers Choice in this year’s Kingston Country Fair.
    Roane County Family and Community Education Clubs were in charge of the competitions, which generated 187 entries.
    Best of Show entries were Minnie Beth Wright’s pickled okra and Christina Andrews’ crochet.
    Winners in each division and category with entries are:
    Division A: Needlework
    • Class 1, Afghan — Barbara Ricker, first; Martha Barding, second.

  • Three generations win

    Three first-place winners in this year’s Kingston Country Fair spanned as many generations in Mary Jane Jakubowski’s family.
    A quilt machine-pieced by Jakubowski and machine-quilted by her daughter, Cathi Gundlah, took top honors in Division B, Class 7.
    Gundlah’s “Magnolia Summer” hand-applique quilt was awarded the blue ribbon in Division B, Class 4.
    Jakubowski’s granddaughter, Angela Petrocelli, took first place with her counted cross-stitch piece in Division A, Class 9.

  • Get ready to 'fill 'er up' for United Way's Pump Day

    Roane County residents can support United Way while getting a fill-up Nov. 3.

    That’s when the Roane County United Way will have its annual Pump Day at Rocky Top Markes in Kingston, Harriman and Rockwood.

    Rocky Top Markets will donate 5 cents for every gallon pumped that day to the Roane County United Way.  

    A goal of $400,000 has been set for the 2010 United Way campaign.
