  • Kingston Clothes Closet ministry goes worldwide

    Kingston United Methodist Church’s Clothes Closet has begun broadening its ministry of providing clothes, household goods and furniture — even bridal gowns and prom dresses — to other parts of the state, nation and around the world.

    The Clothes Closet began more than 20 years ago in one room in the church’s Ministry Center on Church Street.

  • Big Emory Baptist Association making plans for Pigeon Forge youth conference

    Big Emory Baptist Association will continue a tradition of more than 30 years with its Draw the Line youth conference next month in Pigeon Forge.

    Worship, praise, skits, testimonies and black lights are planned for the conference, which will be March 22-23 in the Country Tonite Theatre, the latest venue for the Pigeon Forge event.

  • Valentine’s Day specials at state parks

    With nature serving as the perfect, romantic setting, Tennessee State Parks are offering Valentine’s Day packages for those looking for a great deal.  

    All eight state park restaurants will be open Thursday, Feb. 14, most serving a special Valentine’s Day meal.  

    Special overnight packages also are available at Tennessee State Parks’ six inns.

  • Prepare for quake with ShakeOut

    Tennesseans are among the more than 2.5 million people expected to participate in the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Great Central U.S. ShakeOut earthquake drill.

    The ShakeOut will be at 10:15 a.m. Feb. 7.

    It is a multi-state earthquake drill for millions of people to simultaneously practice the recommended response to earthquake shaking:

    • Drop to the ground;

    • Take cover by getting under a sturdy desk or table; and

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Anthony W. Bunch

    U.S. Army Spec. Anthony W. Bunch has returned to the U.S. after being deployed overseas at a forward operating base to serve in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

    He is the son of Irving Bunch and Karen Lawson, both of Oliver Springs.

    The Army specialist is a 2007 graduate of Oliver Springs High School.

    Operation Enduring Freedom is the official name given to anti-terrorism military operations involving U.S. troops and allied coalition partners.
