  • Roane Medical Center to honor county's women Thursday

    Roane Medical Center, Harriman, will recognize the women of Roane County on Oct. 28 in honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

    Area women are welcome to stop by the Women’s Center of Roane Medical Center for a free gift and tour of the facility.

    The staff is also available to schedule mammograms for women still needing their annual exam.

    The Women’s Center is at 307 Devonia St., Harriman.

  • 'Many Moods of Christmas' to be Roane Choral holiday concert

    “The Many Moods of Christmas” will be presented by Roane Choral Society at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 in the Roane State Community College theater on the main campus in Roane County.

    Tellico Village First Baptist Church choir members will also perform in this event.

    Classic carols arranged by Robert Shaw and Robert Russell Bennett will be presented. The choral group will be accompanied by members of the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra.

  • Hardin-Hendrickson

    Kay Seaton of Kingston and Gene and Darlene Jones of Harriman announce the engagement and forthcoming marriage of their daughter, Angi Jones Hardin, to Nathan Hendrickson.

    He is the son of Fillmore and Brenda Hendrickson of Harriman.

    The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 in Swan Pond United Methodist Church, Harriman. A reception will follow at a family friend’s farm.

  • REACH $31,000 toward goal

    Operation REACH president Bobby Collier said city police and firefighters raised $5,858 during road blocks this past weekend.

    Collier said that brought the total raised so far to around $31,000.

    REACH is an acronym for Roane Enriches Another Child’s Holiday. The annual program takes less fortunate children Christmas shopping. Collier said the goal this year is to raise $125,000.

    The Roane County Sheriff’s Office plans to raise funds for REACH this week by turning the old county jail in Kingston into a haunted house.

  • Kingston library now responding to texting

    Patrons of the Kingston Public Library may now receive text-message alerts concerning overdue items or the availability of books or other materials.

    The library began the new text-message service in October.

    The new service also allows patrons to send text messages to the library at 466-8901 to renew books, ask a reference question and reserve a book.

  • Blessed Sacrament taking Christmas basket applications

    Blessed Sacrament Church in Harriman will be taking applications for Christmas Baskets. Families/adults, needing assistance are asked to bring some form of identification and proof of income.
    Applications will be accepted at Blessed Sacrament’s church office on Margrave Dr. in Harriman on the folowing dates: Tuesday, Nov. 2, 9 a.m. to noon, 5 p.m. to 7; Wednesday, Nov. 3, 9 a.m. to noon; Tuesday, Nov. 9, 10 a.m. to noon; and Wednesday, Nov. 10, 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Churches gear up for Christmas basket programs

    Kingston area churches have started the annual process  to make sure Roane County families in need have a merrier Christmas.

    Kingston United Methodist Church started taking applications earlier this week for its Christmas basket program.

    Kingston First Baptist Church will start its application process next week for families seeking assistance from the church’s Chrstmas food basket and angel tree programs.

  • Rockwood First Christian to mark 125th anniversary

    Rockwood First Christian will celebrate 125 years of ministry to the community on Oct. 17.  

    The celebration begins at 10 a.m. with a welcome by Pastor Kara Foster, special singing and a brief presentation on the church’s history, with pictures from the past and present.

    The worship service begins at 11 a.m. with preaching from the Rev. David Fulks, who grew up in the church and in Rockwood.

    The celebration will continue afterward with a luncheon in the fellowship hall.

  • Rockwood library slates Amnesty Week Oct. 25-31

    October is the month for trick or treating, and this year the Rockwood Public Library is giving its patrons a treat.

    The library will have Amnesty Week Oct. 25-31.

    Patrons with overdue library materials may return those materials and have overdue fees waived, said Margaret Marrs, library director.

    “Please bring in any book, audios, videos, CDs or DVDs that you have misplaced or neglected to return — and no matter how overdue they may be, you will be forgiven,” Marrs said.
