  • MILITARY MATTERS: Levi G. Fletcher

    U.S. Army Pvt. Levi G. Fletcher recently graduated from basic combat training at Fort Jackson, Columbia, S.C.

     Fletcher, a 2012 graduate of Roane County High School, is the brother of John Fletcher of Kingston.

    During the nine weeks of training, the soldier studied the Army mission, history, tradition and core values, and physical fitness.

  • Calfee passes first House bill

    First-term state Rep. Kent Calfee, R-Kingston, officially passed his first bill recently in the Tennessee House of Representatives.

    House Bill 940, which creates a special committee to review Tennessee's underground utility damage prevention program, will now travel to the desk of Gov. Bill Haslam to be signed into law.

  • The Garden Gate: Easter Bunny's all in the stars

    Easter traditions and religious references are everywhere right now, and lilies and churchly references are universal.  

    So how did rabbits get in the picture? And how could a rabbit lay many-colored eggs?

    The Easter Bunny legend finds its roots in the mythology of a constellation of stars. In this case it is the constellation of Lupus the Hare.

    In Greco-Roman mythology, Hermes, messenger to the Olympian gods, placed Lupus among the stars to honor its swiftness.

  • Mr. & Mrs. McNelly 50th

    Mr. and Mrs. Rolland McNelly of Midtown will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 2.

    Their children will give a reception in their honor from 2 to 4 p.m. April 7 in Piney Grove Baptist Church fellowship building at 2323 Ruritan Road, Midtown. Call Robin at 712-0286 for information or directions. All relatives and friends are invited to attend. The couple requests no gifts.

    McNelly and the former Carolyn Rayburn were married on April 2, 1963, in Rockwood, with the Rev. Bobby Spann officiating.

  • Soup’s On to help out abused kids

    Kids First Child Advocacy Center of the 9th Judicial District will have its first Roane County Soup’s On fundraiser on April 4.

    Both lunch and dinner of homemade soup, bread and cookies will be served in Kingston First Baptist Church’s family life center.

    Lunch hours will be from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dinner will be served from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

    Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door.

    Proceeds from the event benefits the Child Advocacy Center.

    Jessica Nicole Snow and Clint Alan Edmonds were married on Oct. 6 in Union Chapel Baptist Church, Kingston.

    Pastor Ronald Nickell officiated during the 3:30 p.m. candlelight ceremony.

    The bride is the daughter of Ricky and Tina Snow of Harriman.

    Her grandparents are Vickie Frogg of Harriman and the late Larry Frogg, and Kenny and Mary Snow of Harriman.

    The groom is the son of George Alan and Debbie Edmonds of Harriman.

    Mr. and Mrs. William "Bill" Goldston  Jr. will celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on April 5.

    The couple will be honored with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. April 6 in Riverside Baptist Church's fellowship hall, Harriman. All relatives and friends are invited to attend; the couple requests no gifts.

  • Caregivers course starts next week

    A free six-week Powerful Tools for Caregivers course will begin April 7 in Mid-East Community Action Agency’s Roane County office at 1362 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood.

    The course will be taught from 2:30 to 5 p.m. for six consecutive Sundays through May 12.

    Powerful Tools Class Leaders and Master Trainers Kate and Dale Allen, assisted by Mid-East Senior Services Director Amber Jacks, will teach the course.

    Although there is no fee, class size is strictly limited, and pre-registration is required.

  • MILITARY MATTERS: Drake Austin Parker

    U.S. Army Pvt. Drake Austin Parker recently graduated from basic military training at Fort Jackson, S.C.

    He is the son of Rebecca and Grady Riggins, and Kevin and Susan Parker, all of Knox-
    ville.

    The private’s grandparents are Tom and Linda Little of Kingston Springs and Wayne and Becky Parker of Kingston.

    Parker completed a 12-week program that included training in military discipline, physical development and basic warfare principles and skills.

  • Kingston Lions Club getting ready for pancake breakfast

    The public was given a sampling of spring a few weeks ago with Kingston Rotary Club’s pancake breakfast.

    Now it’s time for the second part, with Kingston Lions Club’s annual “spring social” pancake breakfast on April 6.

    “This is the time of year that all old friends gather for fellowship and food at the Kingston First Baptist Church family center,” said Martin Skinner of the Kingston Lions Club. “Friends see friends whom they have not seen since a year ago.”
