• Pro2Serve goes over challenge for books

    The Pro2Serve Challenge for Roane Imagination Library has reached and exceeded its goal after just one month.

    Pro2Serve, a Roane County-based technical and engineering services company, established a challenge grant to match dollar-for-dollar the first $5,000 from new contributors and increased contributions from previous contributors.  

    More than $8,700 was donated by 70 contributors.

    Individuals, families and organizations recognized the value of the Roane Imagination Library’s literacy program to the education of local children.

    “I recently went with my Garden Club from Kingston, and everyone really enjoyed the food and the trip,” she added.

    The Paris Apartment was already on my “Out to Lunch” prospect list.

    “When can you and Jimmy (her husband) go with us?” I replied.

  • Facility dispositions waste for 10 years

    After 10 years of operation, the Environmental Management Waste Management Facility has safely dispositioned 1.45 million tons of waste from cleanup projects across the U.S. Department of Energy  Oak Ridge Reservation.

    The facility, which is near the Y-12 National Security Complex, began operating on May 28, 2002.

    This state-of-the-art, engineered disposal facility has a capacity of 2.18 million cubic yards.

  • Workshop to help with starting up a new business

    Roane State Community College’s Tennessee Small Business Development Center and the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce will offer a free workshop for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want a better understanding of starting a new business.

    The workshop will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. June 27 in the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce offices at 1400 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

  • Roane, state jobless rates drop in April

    Roane County’s unemployment rate dropped marginally in April to 7.2 percent.

    That’s a difference of 0.3 percent, according to statistics released late last month by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

    The state reports 25,570 workers in the county’s 27,560 labor force were employed in April.

    In January 2011, the county recorded a jobless rate at 8 percent, 0.8 percent higher than the most recent figures.

  • Y-12 poles get recycled at state forest

    Maintenance Support and Utilities Management personnel at the Y-12 National Security Complex have taken steps to make sure old utility poles aren’t sent to the landfill.
    “We tried to donate them to area organizations, but Y-12 didn’t have the equipment to transport the poles on Tennessee highways,” said Daniel Diden, a planner and estimator in Y-12’s Maintenance Support organization. Neither did these organizations.

  • Y-12 complex honored for workplace safety

    The Y-12 National Security Complex now flies the VPP Star flag after a ceremony held Tuesday morning, June 5.
    The flag signifies Y-12's recent achievement of DOE-VPP Star status, a significant safety and health validation, and it will fly over the site's New Hope Center.
    Issued by the U.S. Department of Energy, the DOE Voluntary Protection Plan flag was presented to Y-12 by Dan Hoag, NNSA acting site manager.

    Previous readers of my “Out To Lunch” articles may remember that I help arrange lunches for our Oak Ridge High School Reunion Committee so that I can also mention our former classmates members in my articles.

    Today’s’ adventure is in a location, 80 East Tennessee Avenue, that was a Texaco Gas Station when our committee members grew up in Oak Ridge.  It has also been the previous site of the Blue Hound Restaurant and Jackson Square Bistro.
