  • Volkswagen’s aim: Eco-friendly

    Volkswagen’s new Southeastern Regional Distribution Center in Roane County is looking to do something that none of the car company’s other warehouses have done.    
    “We are going for LEED certification,” said John Kutz, senior manager of the facility.
    “It will be the only Volkswagen LEED certified warehouse in our entire network.”
    LEED is an acronym for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

  • Volunteer Energy gives grant to Midway PTO

    Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s VECustomers Share program awarded a $2,000 grant to Midway High School PTO in May.
    The program awarded  $2,750 in grants to Roane County organizations during the month. The Tennessee Kidney Foundation received $500; and Roane County United Way was awarded  $250.
    VECustomers Share is a non-profit, tax-exempt charitable organization covering VEC’s 17-county service area.
    The foundation’s funds come from VEC members who have opted to allow VEC to round their electric bills up to the next whole dollar.

  • Some employers closing job sites for safety talks

    The Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration and a number of construction trade associations are participating in a statewide Caught In/Between Accidents Safety Stand Down today, Monday.

    Participating employers will shut down their jobsites at 7 a.m. June 10 to discuss the prevention of caught/in between injuries.

  • Out to Lunch: Big Dog calling for a return to Jake's Tavern and Grill

    An Oxford dictionary, edited in 1946, describes a tavern as a public house for supply of food and drink.

    More recent editions of Webster’s dictionary expand to include whatever the proprietor wishes to advertise.

    This “Out to Lunch” adventure to Jake’s Tavern and Grill in Rockwood tells about some of the varied lunch items we and other customers enjoyed.

    Jacki Hill and her daughter, Kris, opened Jake’s in March in Shoppes at Walden Ridge, the center next door to Fowler’s Furniture and behind Goodwill Industries.

  • Industry Appreciation Breakfast: C.R. Barger & Sons tops, ORNL most beautiful of 2013

    C.R. Barger & Sons, a fifth-generation family company that’s operated for 60 years in Roane County, is Roane County Industrial Development Board’s 2013 Industry of the Year.

    The company received the honor during the recent Industry Appreciation Breakfast on the main campus of Roane State Community College.

    The board also recognized Oak Ridge National Laboratory with the 2013 Beautification Award.

    Rockwood Industrial Board and city officials welcome China New Buffet to Rockwood with a ribbon-cutting ceremony that includes, from left, Mary Gail Gallaher, Vickie Watts, China New Buffet owners Jimmy Haung and Jessie Haung, Mayor James Watts, Rockwood City Council member Jane Long, David McLarty and Rockwood City Recorder Becky Ruppe.

    Watts also gave the Huangs a key to the city.

    The Huangs said their goal is to serve fresh and tasty food in the Mandarin style of South China.

  • Jobless numbers improve in April

    Roane County’s employment front improved slightly in April, with the jobless rate at 7.8 percent, according to statistics released late last month by the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.

    That’s 0.3 percent lower than in March. The county’s jobless rate was at 7.3 percent a year ago, state records indicate.

    The most recent numbers indicate that 25,220 workers in Roane County’s 27,370 labor force were employed during the month.

    More than 108,500 job seekers have registered with Jobs4TN Online, Tennessee’s comprehensive jobs database launched by Gov. Bill Haslam last May.
    More than 1 million job searches have been tallied in the year the service has been live, according to the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
    Employers and job seekers may visit https://www.jobs4TN.gov to register, post jobs and apply for jobs.
