  • Out to Lunch: East Tennessee’s best can be found at Copeland’s

    I was surprised when our niece, Linda Norman, asked when I was going “Out to Lunch” at Copeland’s. I had to ask where it was, because I’d never heard of it.

    Linda lives on River Road and is a dental hygienist in Rockwood. I’ve always had a problem talking when someone was cleaning my teeth, but evidently her patient mentioned the new Kingston restaurant after a treatment.

    Copeland’s is on Martin Street across from Piggly Wiggly in the former Pizza Hut location.

  • Tennessee treasurer visits Roane County

    David Lillard is no stranger to Roane County.

    “In the 1970s, I used to come up here to Roane State when I was a student leader in Tennessee when I was in college,” he said.

    Since then Lillard has moved up from student leader to state leader. He was elected Tennessee Treasurer by the General Assembly in January 2009 and re-elected to the same position earlier this year. He visited Roane County last Thursday with state Rep. Julia Hurley and state Sen. Ken Yager.

    Terrence Rice works in the space where Little Caesars will occupy in approximately two weeks in Kingston. The “hot-and-ready” pizza joint will be located in the same building where Movie Gallery used to be.

  • RSCC’s Goff heads up Roane Alliance board

    Roane State Community College President Gary Goff will serve as this year’s chairman of The Roane Alliance board of directors.


    “The Roane Alliance is very honored, to say the least, that Dr. Goff has agreed to give his considerable talents to the leadership of the Roane Alliance board in the coming year,” said Leslie Henderson, president and CEO of The Alliance.

  • Out to Lunch: Riverwalk has so much, you’ll have to go back

    For this “Out to Lunch” adventure, I revisited a Loudon location I wrote about a year and a half ago.
    Then operated as Stonewall’s BBQ, the new restaurant at Carmichael Inn is now called Riverwalk Grille, with new cooks and a different food menu.


    I began making plans for a business lunch at Carmichael Inn when Bo Carey, my friend and furniture business associate, told me about the change of food served at Riverwalk Grill.

  • Center offers opportunities for Roane area entrepreneurs

    Roane State Community College’s Tennessee Small Business Development Center offers free advice and assistance to entrepreneurs and owners of small businesses in Roane County and surrounding areas.
    The center has two upcoming programs planned to assist business owners and those interested in starting a business.
    A free workshop for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want a better understanding of starting a new business will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Aug. 31 in the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce offices at 1400 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

  • Free program offers boost for women

    For 24 years, nearly 600 women across Appalachia have been taught they have the strength and courage to finish their education and to build the self-esteem they need to find their potential.
    At no cost, the New Opportunity School for Women in Berea, Ky., offers those who find themselves in transition and are seeking to be inspired and build their confidence.
    Applications are now being accepted for the winter 2012 session.  The session is Feb. 5-25; the deadline for application is Dec. 1.

  • Hospital cites eight physicians

    Roane Medical Center recently recognized its physicians for providing excellent patient care at the Harriman hospital.
    Several of the doctors recognized were awarded for their service at Roane Medical Center. Many have been with the hospital for 30 years and longer.
    Dr. Robert Hellmann Jr. was recognized for his 38 years of service as a general practice physician with Roane Medical Center.
    Also awarded were family practice physicians, Dr. Miriam Tedder for her 34 years of service and Dr. Dwight Willett for his 33 years.

  • Roane Medical hires Burns as new head of HR

    Elena Burns has joined the administrative staff of Roane Medical Center as the hospital’s human resource director.


    As human resource director, Burns will be responsible for providing professional human resource support for the nearly 350 employees at the Harriman hospital.


    She also will manage employee relations issues, advise and work directly with administrative staff and manage the volunteer services at the hospital.
