  • Gifts help Imagination Library, ministry

    Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s VECustomers Share program recently awarded $2,500 in grants to Roane County community service organizations Roane Imagination Library Inc. and Luminary United Methodist Church's School Backpack Committee.

    VECustomers Share, founded in October 2001, has donated more than $3.8 million to various community-service organizations. It is a nonprofit, tax-exempt charitable organization covering the cooperative’s 17-county service area.

  • Vintage Salon now open for business in Rockwood

    Roane County Chamber of Commerce member Vintage Salon at 700 N. Gateway Ave., Rockwood, recently had a grand-opening and ribbon-cutting ceremony.

    Owners Wendy and Brenda Garrett offer hairstyling for women and men, manicures and pedicures.

  • Smooth transition for new DOE contractor

    URS | CH2M Oak Ridge LLC took over the environmental cleanup of the Oak Ridge Reservation for the U.S. Department of Energy last Monday after a safe, three-month transition.

    The company, known as UCOR. is headquartered in Roane County at East Tennessee Technology Park (formerly K-25 Site), where most of the cleanup efforts will be centered.

  • New hospitalist now on staff at Roane Medical

    Roane Medical Center, Harriman, welcomes Dr. Diane Petrilla as the newest physician to the hospital’s evolving hospitalist program.

    “Dr. Petrilla’s experience and expertise in inpatient care will help support our efforts in effectively administering quality, personalized care for each patient during their stay with us,” said Jim Gann, Roane Medical Center president and chief administrative officer.

    As a hospitalist, Petrilla specializes in inpatient care and is trained in family practice.

  • New look for Harriman Care and Rehab

     Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center recently completed a renovation designed to improve the experience of its residents.

    The building, at 240 Hannah Road, now has a new trach unit, a rehabilitation gym and private suites.

    The work included new floors, refaced cabinets, a remodeled dining room and a fresh coat of
    paint.

    Outside, the property has new landscaping and a three-hole golf putting green in the courtyard area as part of “Rehab Resort.”

  • Jobless rate up all across the state

    The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development reports that 91 counties — including Roane — experienced an upward surge in June unemployment rates.
    The statistics made public last week indicate that only four Tennessee counties — DeKalb, Hawkins, Moore and Smith — saw a decrease in jobless rates.
    Roane County’s rate for June is reported at 9.2 percent, a 0.9 percent jump over May’s 8.3 percent.
    By the state’s estimates, 26,010 workers in the county’s 28,650 labor force were employed.

  • 100,000 tax-return preparers failed to follow guidelines

    As part of its new oversight program of the nation’s tax-return preparation industry, the Internal Revenue Service is sending letters to an estimated 100,000 who prepared returns in 2011 but failed to follow new requirements.
    All paid tax-return preparers must obtain a Preparer Tax Identification Number and, when required to do so, sign their names and include their PTINs on returns and refund claims they prepare for compensation.

  • Turpin heads up Chamber board

    Danice Turpin, director of Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman, is the new chairwoman of the Roane County Chamber of Commerce board of directors.

    Turpin took over July 1 from outgoing board Chairwoman Diana Knobloch, director of the Roane County United Way.

    The new Chamber chairwoman for 2011-12 holds an undergraduate degree in engineering, a master’s degree in adult education, and an educational doctorate degree in instructional leadership.

  • DOE razing east wing of K-25 building

    The U.S. Department of Energy’s demolition of Building K-25’s east wing began last month.
    The former uranium enrichment facility at East Tennessee Technology Park was once the world’s largest building under one roof, covering more than 44 acres.
    The project is one of DOE’s highest environmental management priorities in Oak Ridge and an integral component to completing cleanup of the technology park.
