  • Roane jobless rate down, but higher than ’10

    Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development statistics released last month indicate that Roane County’s unemployment rate dropped by 0.1 percent in May.

    The 8.3 percent rate, however, is half a percent higher than last year, when the state reported the county’s jobless rate at 7.8 percent.

    A state ranking of the 10 counties with the lowest unemployment rates no longer includes Roane County, although both Washington and Cheatham counties, respectively in the No. 9 and 10 slots, also report an 8.3 percent May jobless rate.

  • Stricklan co-oping at John Deere

    Patricia “Allie” Stricklan, a Tennessee Tech University student from Harriman, has been selected for a one-year cooperative education, or co-op assignment, with John Deere Power Products, Greene-ville.

    During an assignment that began in May, Stricklan is providing support and basic troubleshooting for current operations.

    She will investigate, gather and analyze data for various recurring tasks.

  • Facelift for Pizza Hut

    Harriman’s Pizza Hut has a whole new look.

    The restaurant was recently closed for several days while workers performed renovations that included new paint and masonry on the exterior and an interior redesign.

    The restaurant is now open for business and offering traditional Pizza Hut fare in the newly revamped digs.

  • Comcast now offering Xfinity in Roane County area

    Comcast is now offering Xfinity TV, phone and Internet services in Roane County.

    Xfinity gives Comcast customers more choice and more control over more entertainment.

    It’s also the new brand name for Comcast’s technology platform, products and services, though Comcast remains the name of the company.

    Xfinity expands products and services and offers area Comcast customers more high definition, speed, choice and control over their services.

  • J.R. Global poised to buy armory

    The Harriman Economic Development Board is working to sell the former National Guard Armory to owners of the metal fabrication company presently leasing the facility.

    Board member Donna Demyanovich said they seem to have reached an agreement to sell it for $150,000, with J.R. Global Manufacturing owner J.R. Owens putting down $100,000 and paying the remaining $50,000 over five years.

    Contracts were to be signed last week, but officials could not be reached for comment.

  • Wilson new to Walmsley’s Kingston dental practice

    Dr. James Walmsley Jr. welcomes an associate, Dr. Bruce Wilson, to his Kingston dental practice to offer full service dentistry in one location.

    Walmsley has focused on restorative and cosmetic dental procedures and has typically referred out most surgical cases to specialists in Oak Ridge and Knoxville.

    “I'm so glad to be able to offer these services to patients here in one office,” he said. “People don't like the drive; it’s so much more convenient to offer most everything right here in our office now.”

  • Out to Lunch: Rockwood’s Pick Up Stix offers a nice change of pace

    Ray Collett, Rockwood City Councilman, emailed me in March about a new and different restaurant coming to Rockwood. I immediately added Pick Up Stix Habachi Express to my list of “Out to Lunch” places to visit.

    Located in the former Shack’s Restaurant on Rockwood’s North Gateway Avenue, the building has been completely remodeled for originally a Japanese-style restaurant. On my visit, I discovered another cuisine, “Big A’s BBQ,” was added in mid-May.

  • Chamber members toast of the town

    The Roane County Chamber of Commerce hosted a reception on June 2 for its long-standing Chamber members.

    “It’s our way of saying thanks for your loyalty to the Chamber,” said Diana Knobloch, Chamber board chairwoman, during the event in The Roane Alliance building in Kingston.

    The reception honored those who have been Chamber members for more than 10 years with special certificates, cake and champagne.
