  • Advisory board members sought

    The U.S. Department of Energy is seeking volunteers to fill current and future vacancies on the Oak Ridge Site Specific Advisory Board.

    The board is a federally chartered citizens’ panel that provides recommendations to the DOE’s Oak Ridge Environmental Management Program, which is responsible for cleanup of the Oak Ridge Reservation.

    The 20-member board meets monthly to develop recommendations on cleanup decisions and policy issues. Terms last two years, and members may serve up to three terms.

  • Super Saturday slated to promote Shop Roane First

    Roane County Chamber of Commerce has taken its annual Shop Roane First program to the next level.  

    The Chamber’s board of directors has adopted a new promotional activity to support — as a whole and individually — a dedicated “shop local day” this holiday season to remind consumers that it helps the county, the Chamber and area businesses to Shop Roane First.

  • Haywood, Kite new to industrial board

    The Roane County Commission appointed two new members to the industrial development board earlier this month.
    Tommy Pemberton and Kyle Agee resigned, creating vacancies on the board.
    Teddy Haywood was selected to replace Agee.  
    Bob Kite was chosen to replace Pemberton.
    The industrial development board works to attract new business and industry to the coun-ty.
    Kite and Haywood each spoke to the commission before being appointed.

  • Bus tour attracts public’s interest

    The U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge facilities public bus tour has again posted strong attendance numbers.  
    The annual tour, offered from June until early September, provided the public opportunities to interact at DOE’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Y-12 National Security Complex, and East Tennessee Technology Park.
    Since its inception in 1996, the tour has attracted more than 24,500 visitors.

  • 40-year DOE leader retires

    Daniel H. Wilken, assistant manager for administration at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office, retired Nov. 3 after serving nearly 40 years as a federal employee.
    Wilken held the position since July 1989 and was responsible for the office’s procurement, federal and contractor human resources, automated data processing, records management, telecommunications, training, organization and management analysis, logistics activities, and management of the DOE’s 34,000-acre Oak Ridge Reservation.

  • Tax preparers urged to register now

    The Internal Revenue Service is contacting nearly 23,000 Tennessee tax return preparers this week to remind them to renew their preparer tax identification number to qualify to prepare federal tax returns in 2011.
    “New regulations require all paid preparers to apply or reapply for a PTIN before preparing federal tax returns in 2011,” said IRS spokesman Dan Boone.
    This week, the IRS is sending renewal reminder notices to 22,723 tax professionals in Tennessee who currently have PTINs.
