Thomas said the family raises about 15 head of cattle on the farm, but his son, Gealon, is exploring options for raising truffles on land where oak trees have recently been planted. He hopes the farm will continue to be a Thomas family operation in the hands of his son and grandchildren.
‘I love this farm. I can’t imagine the Lord made a place that’s more beautiful’ ‘I never get tired of it’

For 100 years, the family of Harlan Thomas has been running a farm off Bowman Bend Road in Roane County.

“I love this farm. I can’t imagine the Lord made a place that’s more beautiful. I never get tired of it,” Thomas said.

Back in 1917, Thomas’ great-grandfather on his mother’s side purchased 400 acres of land near Bowman Bend. The land was used to raise cattle, strawberries and hay.

Today, just 33 acres of the land is used by the Thomas family for raising about 15 head of cattle.
