Proposed tax hike less than schools had sought

The Roane County Budget Committee voted to recommend a property tax rate increase for education on Tuesday, but it wasn’t the amount school officials were looking for.

The Roane County Board of Education had requested a 29-cent increase in the property tax rate. The committee only approved an additional 20 cents.

“We’re going to do everything we can to keep the programs that we have,” Director of Schools Gary Aytes said following the meeting.
