Jeremiah McClure has been helping with the care of Ruby, a shelter dog brought into the jail and cared for by the inmates. Upon McClure's release, Ruby will be going home with him.

Ruby escaped the Roane County Animal Shelter only to find herself happily behind bars at the Roane County Jail.

The Roane County Sheriff’s Office trustees, the inmates selected to do work around the county, have adopted the sweet furry mascot.

“I think a dog brings love and compassion to those who may not be getting a lot of love and compassion, and they can share it back and forth,” said Sheriff Jack Stockton.

The trustees built her a shelter themselves, decorating it lovingly with a bone that says Ruby Red.
