  • Harriman students medal at state SkillsUSA

    Tennessee Technology Center of Harriman students brought home three gold and two bronze
    medals from their participation in the 2012 State of Tennessee SkillsUSA competition in Chattanooga/

    Five of the nine participating students received medals.

    Competitors from the Harriman center included Andrew Clinton, automotive technology; Cynthia Bazel, job interview; Robert Vought, precision machining; and Chris Jones, a dual-enrolled student from Wartburg Central High School, welding.

  • Recorders part of concert

    Midtown Elementary School’s spring concert in the Princess Theatre featured some brand-new instruments.

    Thirty-seven students performed in various acts, including the choir and a talent show.

    Forty-nine fifth-graders  played newly puchased recorders supplied through donations from donorschoose.com.  

    The site allows teachers to post their projects, and donors can support the cause of their choosing.

  • Hiwassee dorm getting a facelift

    Facility staff, work-study students and volunteers at Hiwassee College in Madisonville are busy preparing for what is expected to be the largest entering freshmen class in recent history.

    Those preparations include significant renovations to Tom Black Residence Hall, which was constructed in 1963-64.

    Suites have been remodeled, painted and furnished.

    Other improvements include energy efficient windows, new tile floors, upgrades to bathrooms and a new roof.

  • Cherokee signing up new students

    Cherokee Middle School, Kingston, will have its new-student registration from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 1 in the school at 200 Paint Rock Ferry Road.

    This registration is only for those new to the Cherokee school district. Elementary students transferring from Kingston and Midtown are not considered new enrollees.

  • Perma-Fix awards five scholarships

    The second annual Perma-Fix Career Day Scholarships have been awarded to a graduate from each of the five Roane County high schools.

    The students receiving the $250 scholarships applied for them during their junior year while participating in the Roane County Chamber of Commerce-sponsored High School Career Day.

    “We want to encourage and help students to continue their education after high school,” said Kenyon Mee, facility manager for Diversified Scientific Services Inc., a subsidiary of Perma-Fix Environmental Services in Kingston.

  • Simultaneously earn pharmacy, public health degrees at ETSU

    East Tennessee State University of Johnson City has become one of only 15 schools in the nation where students can simultaneously pursue a doctor of pharmacy degree and a master’s degree in public health.

    Beginning with the 2012-13 fall semester,
    ETSU’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy and the ETSU College of Public Health will offer the PharmD/MPH academic track.

  • Tech scholarships awarded to Harriman students

    Tennessee Technological University students Grace Claudy and Bo Murphy of Harriman are the 2012 recipients of academic awards from the College of Arts and Sciences.

    Claudy, a 2009 graduate of Faith Christian Academy, is the daughter of Mark and Alison Claudy of Harriman and is a junior history major.

    She received the Marion Hood and Arthur Langlois Scholarship.

    Murphy, a 2007 graduate of Faith Christian Academy, is the son of Russ and Brenda Murphy of Harriman and is a senior political science major.

    Midway Elementary School principal Keevin Woody, far right in back row, recently honored the school’s May students of the month.

    They are,  in order of grade, Orion McKnight, Taylor Browning, Adrian Hill, Maranda Jones, Michael Muir, Amelia Stakely, Bree Duff, Kaylee Steele, Cyrus Trew, Sarah Edmonds, Grace Luke, Ashley McGhee, Jared Collins, Brooke Willett, Cheyenne Jenkins, Gracey Hixon, Savanna Rayburn, Angelica Millsaps, Kimberly Millsaps, Alexis Layne, Brooklyn McGhee and Paige Bacon.

  • Public’s help sought for ’12 Teachers Supply Closet

    Roane County Chamber of Commerce is starting the Teachers Supply Closet campaign earlier this year to allow donors to take advantage of back-to-school sales at area businesses.

    The annual drive collects school supplies and monetary donations to help public school teachers and students in Roane County.

    “This is the 10th year that Teachers Supply Closet has provided a one-day free shopping experience for Roane County’s public school teachers,” said Leslie Henderson, president and CEO of The Roane Alliance.

  • Roberts receives Altrusa scholarship

    Natasha Roberts of Rockwood is a recipient of this year’s Altrusa’s annual scholarship awards.  

    Roberts is enrolled in Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman. Her scholarship will support her course work in medical administrative billing and coding.  

    The goal of Altrusa’s scholarships is to encourage and support area women who are striving to complete their education, search for jobs, and become financially independent.
