The Roane County High School Marching Band recently performed in the 189th St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah, Ga.

Of the 33 bands in the parade, the RCHS band was selected to be the featured award band representing the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee.

The band played “God Bless America” as it marched over three miles through the squares of Savannah and along the Savannah River.

Harriman’s Lily Taylor is among the 397 Ouachita Baptist University students named to the dean’s list for fall 2012 semester.

Taylor will receive a certificate of recognition from Ouachita. Her name will also be included in the “National Dean’s List” for 2012-13.

To be named to the dean’s list, a student must compile at least a 3.5 grade-point average and be classified as a full-time student, with a minimum of 12 academic hours.

The Roane County Board of Education had another lengthy school calendar discussion last week.

Longtime Board Member Mike “Brillo” Miller, who thinks the county starts school too early, once again found himself on the losing end of the debate.

The board approved the 2012-13 calendar by an 8-2 vote.

Rob Jago joined Miller in voting against it.

“You know how I am about the calendar,” Miller said. “I just don't think we ought to start until after Labor Day.”

Roane State Community College’s music department will have an alumni concert from 7 to 9 p.m. April 6 in the O’Brien Theatre on the main campus in Roane County.

Admission is free

The concert will feature alumni from Concert Choir, Celebration Singers, Jazz Band and Bluegrass Band.  As this year’s virtual choir project, the music department will debut an original composition, “Diversity, Similarity,” by Roane State professor Geol Greenlee with lyrics by student Chris Arnold.
