  • Tenn. Technology Center ready for SkillsUSA contest

    Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman students have spent the last few weeks competing for this year’s SkillsUSA titles.

    SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together toward ensuring  America has a skilled workforce. Its goal is to help each student excel, and competitions on school, state and national levels aim to assist students in putting their best work forward.

    The Harriman school will be well represented at the state competition this spring in Chattanooga.

  • University of Tennessee at Chattanooga graduates: Fall 2012

    Three University of Tennessee at Chattanooga students from Roane County received their degrees during fall commencement.

    Samuel Collins received a bachelor’s degrees in health and human performance: exercise science: applied.

    Lauren Hix’s bachelor’s degree is in psychology.

    Cody Wampler received a bachelor’s degrees in health and human performance: exercise science: pre-professional.

    More than 700 students were in the graduating class.

  • King College honors: Fall 2012

    King College recently honored Roane County students in traditional and professional studies undergraduate programs who received academic honors for fall semester.

    Named to the president’s list were Robert Ray Kring of Harriman; Michael Scott Bandy, Deepa Cecilia Garren and Eden Buchanan Sherrod of Kingston; Hannah Elyse Hester and Krista Susanne Whaley of Oliver Springs; and Jerry Michele Crowe and Jessica Dawn Golliher of Rockwood.

  • Altrusa scholarships offered to women

    Altrusa International Inc. of Oak Ridge is offering scholarships of up to $1,000 to deserving Roane County women to support their pursuit of education and/or training.

    The scholarships honor Sarah Ketron and Pat Rush, two former Altrusa presidents and civic leaders.

    Altrusans seek to encourage and support women who are striving to complete their education, search for jobs and become financially independent.

  • East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy dean's list: Fall 2012

    William C. Carothers of Kingston and Rebekah L. Loden of Rockwood are among students earning dean’s list achievement at East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy for fall session.

    Students who qualified for the dean’s list were enrolled in no fewer than 12 credit hours and achieved a semester grade-point average of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale, with no grade lower than a B-minus.

    ETSU is in Johnson City.

  • Mechatronics program info sessions set at RSCC’s Roane campus March 20

    Anyone interested in Roane State Community College’s new high-tech mechatronics program is invited to information sessions on Wednesday, March 20 at the college’s Roane County campus in Harriman.

    The information sessions will be held at 11:15 a.m. and 3:15 p.m. in room O-106 in the O’Brien Humanities Building. Visitors only need to attend one of the sessions.

    Mechatronics includes instruction in electronics, mechanics, computer science, robotics and process control.

  • Monroe selected to attend Governor’s School for dance

    Amber Monroe of Rockwood has been selected to attend the Dance Division of the 2013 Tennessee Governor’s School.

    Monroe was chosen from a pool of more than 800 applicants. She has also been awarded a talent scholarship for the Governor’s School.

    Her audition process at Middle Tennessee State University involved a group dance audition and an interview with a panel of judges.

    In order to be chosen for the program, applicants must have outstanding academic performance and a high grade-point average.

  • Summer school set for teachers

    Higher education and K-12 professionals will converge on Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College campus in June for the Peabody Professional Institutes.

    Five week-long institutes from June 10-28  include:

    Achievement Gap Institute, focusing on understanding and developing tools for closing the achievement gap;

    Beginning Teachers in Independent Schools, offering professional development for new or early career teachers;

  • Field Trips: February 2013

    Upcoming out-of-state and overnight field trips approved by the Roane County Board of Education in February:

    Feb. 4-8 — Oliver Springs Middle sixth grade attended Tremont in Townsend.

    Feb. 14-15 — Two Roane County High wrestling students competed at state tournament in Murfreesboro.

    Feb. 22-23 — Five Roane County High and five Rockwood High Science Bowl Team members competed in Science Bowl at Pellissippi State Community College in Maryville.
