    Three Middle Tennessee State University students from Roane County graduated during the sum-
    mer commencement ceremony.

    They were Eric A. Byrd of Harriman and Corie A. Gouge and Sarah C. Wright, both of Kingston.

  • University of Rochester dean's list: Spring 2011

    Chelsea Martin of Kingston was named to  the University of Rochester dean’s list for spring semester.

    Martin, a senior majoring in language and linguistics and Japanese, is the daughter of Katherine and Melvin Martin.

    She is a graduate of Webb School of Knoxville.

    The University of Rochester is a private research university in Rochester, N.Y.

  • RSCC instrumental ensembles concert set

    Roane State Community College’s music department will present an instrumental ensembles concert next weekend.

    The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Oct. 21 and 22 in the theatre on the main campus in Roane County.

    The concert will feature the Jazz Band, Bluegrass Band and Stage Band.

    A $5 donation is suggested.

  • Applications accepted now for internship in Oak Ridge

    Applications are now being accepted for the Volkswagen Distinguished Scholars Program, a research internship administered for Volkswagen Chattanooga by Oak Ridge Associated Universities on behalf of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

    Applications can be submitted online through Feb. 12, 2012.

    The program is a summer internship that awards students with a paid stipend, housing allowance (where applicable), and mileage for one roundtrip to/from the internship site if more than 60 miles from the student’s home.

  • Triathlon on heels of good behavior

    Students at Kingston Elementary School were recently treated to a special event as a reward for demonstrating good behavior and modeling outstanding character.

    Fifth-graders who fit the criteria participated in a mini-triathlon during the school day while the rest of the student body cheered them on.

    The triathlon consisted of a half-mile run, one-mile bike ride and 75-yard jump rope segment through sprinklers.

  • Combining technology and English

    Roane County English teachers, from left, Jeff Davis, Lindsay Harris, Ruth Thompson and Deborah Rice spent part of their summer break participating in an Improving Teacher Quality training, funding by a grant through Tennessee Tech University and the Tennessee Higher Education Commission.

    The professional development included many ways to incorporate technology into their English classrooms using iPads as the tool for implementation.

    The grant is a year-long process with Tennessee Tech faculty members Jeremy Wendt, Julie Baker, Janet Isbell and Brenda Wilson.

  • Run for Your Health to help boost school wellness program

    Roane County Schools Coordinated School Health Program will conduct the the third annual Run for Your Health 5K race/walk on Nov. 5 at Fort Southwest Point, Kingston.

    Proceeds from the race will supplement health and wellness initiatives for students in Roane County Schools.

    “Efforts that create opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles are an integral part of the educational process and enhance academic success,” said Patti Wells, race coordinator and coordinated school health coordinator.
