  • FBI offering Internet Challenge

    Teachers and students are encouraged to take an opportunity to participate in the Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge.

    The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge is an online educational program that teaches children about Internet safety, in a fun way, using interactive games.

    While competing with other similar-size schools, students in grades 3-8 will be taught to recognize online dangers and how to be safe cyber surfers.

  • Kyle Bates enrolled at Ga. Tech

    Kyle Bates of Harriman is part of the freshman class at Georgia Institute of Technology.

    Bates is an electrical engineering major.

    Georgia Tech is in Atlanta.

  • Arielle Lankford graduates

    Arielle Lankford of Harriman recently received her bachelor’s degree in nursing from the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing of Emory University.

    Emory University is in Atlanta.

  • Civitan supports Ridge View music

    Rockwood Civitan Club President Chris Barton represents the organization in presenting a $100 check to Chelsea Farr of Ridge View Elementary School in support of the Rockwood school’s music program.

  • DAR funds history scholarship

    The Avery Trace Chapter, NSDAR Scholarship Committee, on behalf of the chapter is funding a book scholarship for a Roane State Community College student majoring in history.

    On hand for the $400 scholarship fund presentation are, from left, Honorary Regent Jane McPherson, First Vice Regent Rosemary Alexander, Roane State Foundation Chairwoman Linda Brown, Avery Trace Regent Brenda Hall McDonald and Honorary Regent Joyce Tidwell.

  • Folks step up for teachers

    With a little more than a week remaining before teachers would be picking up supplies at Roane County Chamber of Commerce’s Teachers Supply Closet, less than a third of the goal for donations had been received.

    It was time to sound the alarm to make things happen if the Closet was going to be successful.

    Allen Lutz, education and workforce development specialist for The Roane Alliance, responded with an email to businesses and media sources.

  • Roane State Community College graduates: Summer 2012

    A number of Roane State Community College students from Roane County graduated following summer semester.

    Graduating cum laude with a 3.69-3.5 grade-point average were Kelli Reed of Harriman, Jared King and Samuel Stephenson, both of Kingston.

    Other graduates from Roane County are:

    Harriman — Amber Butcher, Cedric Clinkscales, Lavoisier Gadsden-Gilliard, Kayla Gibson, Will Maines and Lindsey Walkup.

  • Roane State Community College dean's list: Summer 2012

    Ashley Hahn of Kingston is among the students earning dean’s list placement at Roane State Community College for summer semester.

    To be eligible, a student must attain at least a 3.5 grade-point average while attempting 12 or more semester hours of college-level courses.

    Roane State is a two-year college providing transfer curricula, career-preparation programs and continuing education.

    Founded in 1971, the college’s main campus is in Roane County between Harriman and Rockwood.
