  • Friday’s deadline for student vaccinations

    Students enrolled in Roane County Schools who need the required immunizations to attend school have until Sept. 2 to fulfill the requirements.

    Tennessee Department of Health requires all pre-school, pre-K, kindergarten, seventh-grade and new enrollees to the system to receive proper immunizations before entering school for the this year.  

    Due to a shortage of vaccine medications, the deadline for Roane County students was extended to Sept. 2.

  • Many graduate from Roane State

    A number of Roane State Community College students from Roane County graduated from Roane State Community College during the 2010-11 academic year.

    Graduating summa cum laude with a grade-point average of 4.0-3.9 were:

    Harriman — Phillip James and Gary Waldron.

    Kingston — Stacie McNeely and Ashley Randles.

    Oliver Springs — Lana Hensley.

    Rockwood — Shelbey Jolley and Shawn Long.

  • Going for a goal, not a grade: Harriman’s Carter tackles scientific research

    Participating in Maryville College’s Undergraduate Science Education and Research Institute will go on the résumés or curriculum vitas of 10 Maryville College students this summer, and the institute just might influence where those résumés end up.

    The summer experience is opening students’ eyes to new possibilities in science.

  • ‘Story That Was Never Told’ earns Conley writing honors

    Roane County High School student Chelsea Sue Conley was honored in a writing contest in conjunction with
    the 23rd annual Tennessee Mountain Writers Conference in Oak Ridge.

    Contest winners in seven categories were announced and awards presented during the conference banquet.

    Conley received third-place recognition in the Student Prose category for “The Story That Was Never Told.”

  • And ... they’re off! First fun run raises money for two Midway athletic programs

    Eighty-five participants competed in the inaugural South of the River Fun Run last month.

    The event featured a kids mile, a 2-mile walk and a 5k run. All proceeds benefited the Midway High School basketball and football programs.

    The kids mile kicked off the event. Participants raced around the Midway baseball field while parents and bystanders cheered them on.

    Emma Snow won the gold medal, Nathan Byers took the silver, and Jake Sullivan was awarded the bronze.

  • Initiative offers scholarships to seniors of ’12

    A new program aimed at Roane County high school seniors graduating in 2012 aims to help those whose education may end at high school due to the cost of higher education.

    With the goal of increasing the higher education attainment and retention rate, tnAchieves seeks to provide every public high school senior from Roane County the opportunity to attend community college with mentor support.

  • Thew a Level II food science winner

    Harriman’s Beth Thew, seated in center, was recently recognized as a Level II (11th- and 12th-grade) state winner in the food science project at the Tennessee 4-H Roundup at University of Tennessee at Martin.

    She received a $500 college scholarship and trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta.

  • Story sends Thomason on D.C. youth tour

    Midway High School senior Whitney Thomason was among more than 140 students from electric cooperative service areas across Tennessee who boarded buses in June to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour.

    Thomason was one of four Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s representatives on the weeklong tour.

    Daughter of Tim and Dana Thomason, she won her place on this year’s tour by writing a winning short story, “Electric Cooperatives: Energizing Our Communities.”

  • Roane State offers Weekend College

    Roane State Community College’s Weekend College option provides time-crunched students with a schedule-friendly path to a college education.

    Offered at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus, Weekend College gives students the option to schedule four separate general education courses in just three days.

    General education classes are ones that all students must take, regardless of major.

    They include subjects in math, science and humanities.
