    A new program aimed at Roane County high school seniors graduating in 2012 aims to help those whose education may end at high school due to the cost of higher education.

    With the goal of increasing the higher education attainment and retention rate, tnAchieves seeks to provide every public high school senior from Roane County the opportunity to attend community college with mentor support.

  • Thew a Level II food science winner

    Harriman’s Beth Thew, seated in center, was recently recognized as a Level II (11th- and 12th-grade) state winner in the food science project at the Tennessee 4-H Roundup at University of Tennessee at Martin.

    She received a $500 college scholarship and trip to National 4-H Congress in Atlanta.

  • Story sends Thomason on D.C. youth tour

    Midway High School senior Whitney Thomason was among more than 140 students from electric cooperative service areas across Tennessee who boarded buses in June to travel to Washington, D.C., for the Electric Cooperative Youth Tour.

    Thomason was one of four Volunteer Energy Cooperative’s representatives on the weeklong tour.

    Daughter of Tim and Dana Thomason, she won her place on this year’s tour by writing a winning short story, “Electric Cooperatives: Energizing Our Communities.”

  • Roane State offers Weekend College

    Roane State Community College’s Weekend College option provides time-crunched students with a schedule-friendly path to a college education.

    Offered at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus, Weekend College gives students the option to schedule four separate general education courses in just three days.

    General education classes are ones that all students must take, regardless of major.

    They include subjects in math, science and humanities.

  • Lipscomb University provost's list

    Anna Uselton of Kingston has been honored at Lipscomb University, Nashville, for academic achievement during spring semester.

    Uselton, a Roane County High School graduate and English major, earned placement on the university’s provost’s list.

    Only students who earn a 4.0 grade-point average while attempting at least 12 credit hours are named to the provost’s list.

  • Savannah College of Art and Design dean's list

    Meagan Linley of Kingston was named to the dean’s list at Savannah College of Art and Design for spring quarter.

    Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 and higher for the quarter earn the recognition.

    Linley is seeking a bachelor’s degree in accessory design at the school, based in Savannah, Ga.

  • Donations sought to stock Teachers Supply Closet

    The Roane County Chamber of Commerce has kicked off the 2011 Teachers Supply Closet, an annual drive to collect supplies and monetary donations to help teachers and students in Roane County.

    The Supply Closet is a highly popular and highly successful effort sponsored by the Chamber, Roane State Community College, Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman and Roane County United Way.

  • Summer school: Lunch & Learn gives teachers career training in the workplace

    The Roane Alliance and Innovation Valley recently provided an Educators in the Workplace Lunch & Learn program to give area educators the opportunity to receive a little schooling themselves this summer.

    “The Roane Alliance, and the other economic development organizations who are partners in the Innovation Valley offer this program to benefit educators, students, businesses and the community overall,” said Allen Lutz, The Alliance’s education and workforce development specialist.
