Debra Ryans of Kingston was awarded a skill-point certificate in Job Skill Demonstration A during the recent SkillsUSA National Leadership and Skills Conference.

She is a student at Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman.

Ryans was among the contest’s high scorers who were awarded the certificates. The honor was awarded in 86 occupational and leadership areas to students who achieved a high score defined by industry.

The skill point certificates were introduced in 2007 as a component of the SkillsUSA Work Force Ready System.

Harriman High School seniors who completed the PLAN program were recently honored at the school’s awards day presentation.

PLAN stands for Prepare, Learn and Navigate, and the project’s goals include raising awareness about postsecondary education, helping students avoid roadblocks in the admissions and registration process, and providing students with tools to optimize success.

Amie Duncan, a Rockwood High School graduate of 2011, was recently awarded the Julia Zumstein Memorial Scholarship.

The scholarship was presented by the Rockwood Band Boosters.  

This is the second year of existence for the scholarship, whose inaugural winner was Nakora Beard.  

The scholarship was endowed to celebrate the life and memory of Julia Zumstein, a longtime and well loved secretary at Rockwood High School who had requested that donations be made to the band program during her battle with cancer.
