  • Roane State opticianry students honored

    Roane State Community College opticianry students won scholarships to attend the Contact Lens Society of America’s annual conference.

    The organization’s conference was April 25-28 in Newport Beach, Calif.

    Students were asked to write papers to win the scholarships, and 11 Roane State students were chosen.

  • Kirkland this year’s recipient of Bernard-Greif Scholarship

    Brendan Kirkland, a 2012 graduate of Rockwood High School, is this year’s recipient of the Bernard-Greif Scholarship.

    Kirkland accepted the $1,000 scholarship during the school’s awards day ceremony.

    He was a member of the Rockwood Tigers football and boys basketball teams.

    Kirkland plans to study toward a nursing degree and eventually pursue a career as a physician’s assistant.

    The Bernard-Greif Scholarship is in its 39th
    year.

  • Midway’s Keeling McGlasson honoree

    Austin Keeling, a 2012 Midway High School graduate, is this year’s recipient of the Betty McGlasson FCE Scholarship to Roane State Community College.

    Family and Community Education clubs were formerly known as Home Demonstration or Homemakers.

    Joann Silvis is president of the Roane County FCE organization.

    The scholarship serves as a tribute to the late McGlasson, a longtime Roane County Extension agent.

    The annual Christmas Ideas Fair in November raises money for this scholarship.

  • Rockwood FBLA state winners

    Rockwood High School students, from left, Carson McCullough, Parker McCullough and Ryan Hamby placed in the top three of their events during the recent Future Business Leaders of America state leadership conference in Chattanooga

    Carson McCullough took second place in introduction to business.

    Parker McCullough won first place in business law and was the recipient of a $300 award, and Ryan Hamby won second place in Web 2.0.

    The McCulloughs are both eligible for FBLA national competition in San Antonio.

  • Sign up now for Summer Jobs+

    Roane State Community College is participating in the Obama Administration’s Summer Jobs+ program.

    The White House describes the program as a “call to action for businesses, nonprofits and government to work together to provide pathways to employment for low-income and disconnected youth in the summer of 2012.”

    As part of the program, Roane State will provide life skills and work skills courses, at no cost, to 50 people age 16-24.

  • Lipscomb University provost's list: fall 2011

    Anna Uselton of Kingston has been honored at Lipscomb University, Nashville, for academic achievement during fall semester.

    Uselton, a Roane County High School graduate and English major, earned placement on the university’s provost’s list.

    Only students who earn a 4.0 grade-point average while attempting at least 12 credit hours are named to the provost’s list.
