  • Center brings home Skills USA gold

    Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman has consistently had an outstanding showing in Tennessee Skills USA competitions, and this year was no different.

    Students participating in this year’s competition in Chattanooga brought home five gold medals and two silver medals.

    The gold-medal winners will represent both the center and Tennessee during the national Skills USA competition next month in Kansas City, Mo.

  • Three finish studies in Crossville

    Three Tennessee Technology Center at Crossville students from Roane County were among those who graduated last month.

    Donahue G. Fitzhugh, a welding student from Harriman; and surgical technology students Jennifer Leffew of Rockwood and Chelsi Sholtz of Kingston were awarded their certificates during the spring graduation ceremony.

    They were among 30 students from 10 counties who participated in the ceremony.

  • Author to speak at Oak Ridge campus

    Author Pamela Schoenewaldt will discuss her book “When We Were Strangers” from 6 to 7:30 p.m. May 26 at Roane State Community College’s Oak Ridge campus at 701 Briarcliff Ave.

    The event, sponsored by Library Services and the Humanities Division, is free and open to the public. “When We Were Strangers” tells the story of Irma, who leaves her village in Southern Italy to seek a new life in 19th century America. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.

  • Tennessee Technology Center graduates 73 students

    Seventy-three of the 152 students eligible for spring graduation participated in Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman commencement ceremony late last month in Kingston First Baptist Church.

    Participating in the ceremony are:

    Automotive — Timothy Elkins, Christopher Ferguson and Davis Kring.

    Business systems technology — Tiffany Adkisson, Amber Bright, Bethany Dye, Viola Edmonds, Ryan Hillis, Michelle Ray and Raeleah Sammons.

  • Former Roane State staffer speaker at ETSU ceremonies

    Former Roane State Community College administrator Fred Sauceman will deliver the keynote address during East Tennessee State University spring commencement exercises on May 7.

    Sauceman, the longest-serving public relations director in ETSU’s history, began his higher-education career at Roane State in
    1980.

  • Plaque honors Rockwood's top grads

    Rockwood High School Classmates present Principal Alan Reed with a plaque containing the names of every valedictorian and salutatorian from 1920 to the present. “We just think it’s kinda unique,” said Mary Alexander Kau, who was among those making the presentation.

    The project began when Patsy Pierce started collecting names of past graduates.

    Kau figured, “Wouldn’t it be nice to honor them some way?”

  • Roane students recipients of Tenn. Tech scholarships

    Two Tennessee Tech University students from Roane County are the recipients of nursing awards from the Cookeville-based university.

    Nikki Taylor, a 2008 graduate of Midway High School, is this year’s recipient of the Whitlow-Crawford Endowed  Scholarship.

    Amanda Foster is the recipient of the Nursing Development Council Endowment and McSpadden-McNew School of Nursing Endowment.

    She is a 2002 graduate of Calvary Baptist School.

    Both students are juniors in Tech’s nursing program.

  • Seminar focuses on helping kids succeed

    Roane County Schools recently hosted a four-day training seminar focused on increasing a child’s chances to succeed in school and life, as well as increase their positive, civil behaviors.

    Derek Peterson, founder of the ICARE-US initiative, personally instructed Phase I and Phase II of the Integrative Youth Development Program “Phlight Academy” for Roane County school counselors, support team, health coordinator, truancy officer, anti-drug coalition program coordinator and Mid-East Head Start staff.
