A historical re-enactment and barbecue dinner to raise money for Roane State Community College students participating in a study-abroad trip to Europe is planned for April 2 at the college’s Oak Ridge campus.

All proceeds will help students with the cost of the Grand European Tour, a journey that will allow Roane State students to visit 10 countries in 20 days, including five days in Normandy, France.

The event will include several re-enactor groups who will demonstrate camp life and military tactics from the periods that they represent.

Less than 15 percent of Civil Air Patrol cadets qualify for the Gen. Billy Mitchell Award.

“It's a long process,” said Lisa McCroskey of Kingston.

She knows from experience. McCroskey received the award last month during a ceremony in Oak Ridge.  

“I felt very, very accomplished because it was a long road and a lot of work,” she said.

McCroskey, 16, is a member of the Civil Air Patrol's Oak Ridge Squadron. She attends Roane County High School.

The East Tennessee Chapter of the National Contract Management Association offers scholarships to encourage students and institutions to promote interest and concentration in the procurement/contract management field.

Three scholarships will be awarded for the upcoming fall semester. They include a $1,000 scholarship for an entering college freshmen, a $2,000 scholarship for a current college student and a third scholarship of $500 to be awarded in either category.

Five students from Roane County enrolled in East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy qualified for the dean’s list for fall session.

Stephanie Hedgecoth of Harriman; William C. Carothers, Seth T. Green and Tara N. Seaman, all of Kingston; and Julie A. Kirkham of Rockwood attained a grade-point average qualifying them for the honor.
