  • LPN entrance tests slated in Crossville

    Tennessee Technology Center at Crossville has scheduled dates for entrance tests required for 2011 practical nursing programs.

    Applicants should call the center at 931-484-7502, Ext. 128, to register for the Compass test.

    The entrance tests will be given at 9 a.m. March 23, April 4, April 11 and April 12.  

    Pre-registration is required with a $15 nontransferable and nonrefundable fee payable at the time of registration.  Cash, debit or credit cards  are accepted.

  • Scholarships available for business majors

    The East Tennessee Chapter of the National Contract Management Association offers scholarships to encourage students and institutions to promote interest and concentration in the procurement/contract management field.

    Three scholarships will be awarded for the upcoming fall semester. They include a $1,000 scholarship for an entering college freshmen, a $2,000 scholarship for a current college student and a third scholarship of $500 to be awarded in either category.

  • Carson-Newman College dean's list

    Jessica L. Laws of Harriman and Bethany D. Parker of Rockwood were named to the dean’s list at Carson-Newman College for fall semester.

    To be named to the dean’s list, a student must complete at least 12 credit hours of work and maintain a grade-point average of at least 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale.

    Carson-Newman is in Jefferson City.

  • ETSU Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy dean's list

    Five students from Roane County enrolled in East Tennessee State University’s Bill Gatton College of Pharmacy qualified for the dean’s list for fall session.

    Stephanie Hedgecoth of Harriman; William C. Carothers, Seth T. Green and Tara N. Seaman, all of Kingston; and Julie A. Kirkham of Rockwood attained a grade-point average qualifying them for the honor.

  • Hiwassee College honors list

    Angel Chantel Edgemon of Kingston earned placement on Hiwassee College’s academic honor’s list for fall semester.

    To be eligible for the the honor, a student must achieve a semester grade-point average between 3.50-3.99 on a full course load of 12 hours or more.

    Hiwassee College is in Madisonville.

    Renard Flowers of Rockwood was named to Newberry College’s dean’s list for fall semester.

    Flowers is a junior at Newberry, which is in Newberry, S.C.

    Students receiving recognition on the dean’s list achieve a grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale during the semester.

  • The eyes have it, and here's how they work

    Dr. Silvia Mende discusses functions of the eye during a recent visit to two of Vivian Harris’ after-school science classes at Midway Elementary School.

    She explained the parts of the eye, showed replicas of eyes and talked about the most common objects that injure eyes.

    Afterward, the students dissected the eyes of cows and looked at the different parts.

  • Ten from Roane get ready to spell in regional bee

    Roane County will be well represented at the Southern Appalachia Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday.

    The bee starts at 9:30 a.m. at the University of Tennessee’s Alumni Memorial Building.

    The Roane students participating are Carly Brown, Harriman Middle; Nathan Byers, Ridge View Elementary; Henry B. Coen, Kingston Elementary; Matthew Charles, Dyllis Elementary.

  • Sweet career path: Marshmallow creations help Midway students explore engineering

    Midway High School was among the 13 area schools Y-12 National Security Complex engineers visited to mark last week’s  National Engineers Week.

    The engineers discussed engineering fields and provided a fun but challenging engineering project to students.

    The students in Jared Phy’s agriculture class also used the opportunity to observe National FFA Week.
