  • Field Trips

    Upcoming out-of-state and overnight field trips approved by the Roane County Board of Education in November:

    Dec. 9-10 — Five Midway Middle School band students will attend East Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association junior clinic at Lee University, Cleveland.

    Dec. 16-17 — Harriman High School boys and girls basketball teams will participate in Climate Controllers Tournament, Hampton.

  • Asian studies forum slated in Oak Ridge

    Two Roane State Community College international students will discuss their educational experiences in Asia during a free forum at 6 p.m. Dec. 7 on the Oak Ridge campus.

    Yashi Chen will discuss growing up in China and her experiences at Roane State, while Minh Nghiem will talk about his childhood in Vietnam and being a college student in America.

  • RSCC closing Dec. 19-Jan. 2 for holidays

    All Roane State Community College campuses will be closed Monday, Dec. 19, through Monday, Jan. 2, for the holi-days.

    All campuses will reopen on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and spring classes will begin on Thursday, Jan. 12.  

    Registration and other self-service options are available through RaiderNet, which can be found online at www.roanestate.edu/raidernet.

    Students who register on or before Jan. 5 are reminded that fees are due by 4:30 p.m. Jan. 5 Eastern to avoid deletion of their class schedule.

  • STEM initiative lauches website

    The Rural Communities STEM Initiative recently launched its website — www.ruralstem.org — making it easier for Roane County students, teachers and community members to find pertinent science, technology, engineering and math education resources linked together in one location.

    RSCI is an Oak Ridge business-education partnership working with middle school teachers in nine East Tennessee school systems to improve students’ STEM skills, based on the new statewide math and science curriculum.

  • Foggy start to schools' 5k race

    More than 160 runners and walkers turned out on a foggy fall morning for the third annual Run for Your Health 5k race and walk, a project of Roane County Schools Coordinated School Health Program.

    Proceeds from the race are used to supplement health and wellness initiatives for students in the Roane County school system.

    “Efforts that create opportunities to promote healthy lifestyles are an integral part of the educational process and enhance academic success,” said Patti Wells, school health coordinator for the school system.

  • RSCC among partners getting federal monies

    Roane State Community College is part of a 10-college consortium that recently received a $19.7 million federal grant to provide training in high-tech fields.

    Anne Arundel Community College in Maryland will lead the national consortium, which includes colleges in nine states with emphasis in science, technology, engineering and math fields.

    The consortium was awarded a U.S. Department of Labor grant as part of its Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training initiative.
