  • Tennessee Scholars: 129 Roane high school seniors cited

    The Roane County Chamber, in partnership with the Roane County Schools, recognized a record number of 129 graduating seniors as Tennessee Scholars at a breakfast awards ceremony on April 23.

    “The Tennessee Scholars program gives you a foundation to build upon to create a successful career,” said Wade Creswell, The Roane Alliance president.

  • Kindergarten, pre-K sign-ups slated May 8-9

    Roane County Schools’ registration for kindergarten and prekindergarten for the 2014-15 school year will take place next month.

    Registration will take place at the elementary schools from 2 to 5:30 p.m. May 8, and from 7:30 to 11 a.m. May 9.

    Parents should register students for the 2014-15 school year at the school in their district.

    Kindergarten students must be 5 on or before Aug. 15; pre-K students must be 4 on or before Aug. 151.

  • Shakespeare scenes on stage this weekend

    The Roane State Community College Playmakers will perform scenes from Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” this weekend in Harriman’s Princess Theatre.

    Performances will be at 2 and 7 p.m. April 26 and at 2 p.m. April 27. Admission is by donation.

    “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a comedy that tells the story of four young Athenian lovers and six amateur actors who become entangled in the intrigues of fairies who live in the forest where the play is set.

  • RCHS percussion ensemble members play at UT

    Roane County High School percussion ensemble members Madison Pearson and Molly Perry tackle the marimbas during a percussion festival on the University of Tennessee campus, Knoxville.

    They were among 18 percussion ensemble members to study and perform with Andrew Bliss, UT’s director of percussion studies.

  • The Tams headlining Education Foundation fundraiser on May 9

    The Roane County school system has asked the newly formed Education Foundation to help fund three important projects for students.

    The school system is looking to expand its successful robotics programs to all county high schools.

    It also is seeking to assist with supporting ACT prep classes at all county high schools and to improve and expand existing security systems in all our county schools.

  • Avery Trace DAR honors ’14 Good Citizens

    Avery Trace Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, recently presented its 2013-14 DAR Good Citizen honor to four high school students in Roane County.

    This year’s recipients are:

    • Harriman High — Chloé Elizabeth Hill, daughter of Haskell Hill and Alice Monroe.

    • Midway High — Michaela Joy Langley, daughter of Jeff and Tonya Langley.

    • Roane County High — Tim Benson, son of Donnie and Tammy Manis.
