  • Band festival at Roane County High next week

    The Rotary Clubs’ ninth annual Roane County Band Festival will start at 7 p.m. Oct. 11 at Roane County High School.

    The exhibition concert features the marching bands of Harriman, Midway, Oliver Springs, Roane County and Rockwood high schools.

    Each band will perform its half-time show at Dr. Nat Sugarman Field in a non-competitive atmosphere.

    This year’s festival is hosted by the Kingston Rotary Club.

    The event is an annual community project shared by the Rotary Clubs of Harriman, Kingston and Rockwood.

  • 5 from Roane among MTSU grads

    Five Middle Tennessee State University students from Roane County were among the 854 who graduated this summer.

    Roane County students who earned their degrees were Daniel Scott Bridges of Oak Ridge; Devin Lee Dutton and Joshua Michael Dutton of Lenoir City; Megan Elaine Lunsford of Oliver Springs; and Jennifer Hollis Rowan of Kingston.

    The commencement ceremony was in Murphy Center on the MTSU campus in Murfreesboro.

  • Midway events for freshmen, seniors

    Midway High School is planning two events on Oct. 14 for its current freshman and senior students.

    An information session for parents of ninth-grade students will include details about the many types of assessments given throughout their four years of high school.

    These assessments include the PLAN and ACT, which are required for college admittance.

    Others to be discussed include end-of-course examinations, state exams given to test a subject’s knowledge base, Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery and Preliminary SATs.

  • Teachers Supply Closet a big boost for educators

    For the eighth year, the Roane County Chamber of Commerce’s Teachers Supply Closet has provided Roane County teachers with supplies to use in their classrooms and help students have what they need to succeed in school.

    While this year’s donations started slow, the community came through to make the project a success for the 40 teachers from 16 schools who went “shopping for free supplies” on Sept. 23.

  • School board's Jago, Nelson now at Level I

    Roane County Board of Education members Rob Jago and Kim Nelson were recently honored for achieving Level I Boardsmanship Awards during Tennessee School Boards Association’s East District fall meeting in Monroe County.

    They were elected to represent Roane County’s District 5/6. Nelson resigned her seat on Aug. 31 due to her election as Roane County circuit court clerk.

    The awards are presented to individual board members who have achieved one of five levels of boardsmanship standards over the past
    year.

  • Kaldenbach awarded ETSU scholarship

    Katrina Kaldenbach of Kingston is among the recipients of East Tennessee State University’s Challenge 2000 Scholarships.

    The $2,000 scholarships are endowed by alumni and friends of the university.

    Kaldenbach recently graduated as salutatorian of Roane County High School.

    She played oboe in the school band, was a color guard and cheerleader, was elected senior class treasurer, and served as chair of the Beta Club’s community service council.

  • YouTube-savvy students can win up to $500 for law history video

    The Tennessee Bar Association is planning its first-ever YouTube video contest to encourage middle and high school students to explore the state’s rich legal history.

    Titled “Tennessee’s Unique History of Law and Liberty,” the contest challenges students to create a three-minute video that tells the story of an event, circumstance or person that illustrates a way in which the Tennessee constitution or legal system has played an important part in the state’s history.

  • Roane students excel in university studies

    East Tennessee State University
    Ciera L. Smith of Kingston is among the East Tennessee State University students who earned placement on the dean’s list for summer session.

    To receive this honor, students must successfully complete a minimum of 12 hours of undergraduate coursework with a grade-point average of at least 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.

    ETSU is in Johnson City.
