  • Students can build a bridge, win big bucks

    Roane County students can experience what it is like to be an engineer by using math, science and technology to design real structures for the 2013 East Tennessee Regional Model Bridge Building Contest.

    The March 9 contest in the American Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge, is open to middle and high school students.

  • Bryan College graduates: Fall 2012

    Steven Alexander of Rockwood graduated from Bryan College earlier this month.

    He was among 144 graduates receiving their degrees during fall commencement.

    Alexander received the Master of Business Administration degree.

  • Coastal Carolina University admissions: Fall 2012

    Jared Breazeale of Rockwood has been accepted at Coastal Carolina University for the fall 2013 semester.

    Breazeale, a Rockwood High School student, plans to major in exercise and sport science.

  • Savannah College of Art and Design dean's list: Fall 2013

    Marinda Thomas of Harriman earned placement on the dean’s list at Savannah College of Art and Design for fall quarter.

    Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the Dean’s List.

    Savannah College of Art and Design is in Savannah, Ga.

  • Tennessee Wesleyan College graduates: Fall 2012

    Amber Cofer of Rockwood received her degree during Tennessee Wesleyan College’s first winter commencement earlier this month.

    “This is a celebration of the achievements of our new graduates,” said Tennessee Wesleyan College President Harley Knowles.

    “In our 155th year of service as an educational leader in Southeast Tennessee, we are celebrating our first winter commencement,” he added. “This is a milestone for the college, as well as a milestone for our new graduates.”

  • Roane teams tops in Clover Bowl regionals

    Roane County garnered top honors in both the eighth- and fourth-grade division championships at the Eastern Regional 4-H Clover Bowl Competition.

    Sixty-four Tennessee counties and nearly 10,000 students competed for the chance to win a regional championship and the highest honor in Clover Bowl competition.

    The contest, at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is modeled after the Scholars Bowl.

  • Jenkins receives STEM award

    Roane State Community College freshman Wes Jenkins, a graduate of Harriman High School, has been awarded a $2,500 STEM Scholarship by B&W Y-12.

    The award is part of B&W Y-12’s ongoing support of science, technology, engineering and mathematics education.

    Recipients of the B&W Y-12 STEM Scholarship must be full-time students at Roane State pursuing a degree in one of the STEM fields of study.

  • Cox Outstanding Student for year at Tech Center

    Jodi Cox of Wartburg was recently chosen as Outstanding Student of the Year for Tennessee Technology Center at Harriman.

    Cox was selected from a group of nine to represent the school for the 2012-13 school year.

    She is enrolled in the Computer Information Technology class and is a member of the Honor Society.

    Cox is an Easy tech associate with Staples of Oak Ridge. She is working on an internship through the school.
