  • Nichols to graduate

    Justin Keith Nichols will graduate this weekend from the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

    He will accept his Doctor of Education degree during commencement at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 14 in the university’s Memorial Coliseum.

    Nichols is the son of Keith Nichols, formerly of Harriman, and Teresa Ruppe Sheppard, formerly of Oakdale.

    Grandparents are Algia Nichols of Harriman and the late Walter Nichols, and Billy and Jean Ruppe of Oakdale.

  • Roane State adds program to learn robotic equipment

    A new Roane State Community College certificate program in mechatronics will train students to become technicians who operate, maintain and repair high-tech automated manufacturing systems.

    The one-year mechatronics program begins Tuesday, Jan. 22 at the Clinton Higher Education and Workforce Training Facility, 214 Nave St. in Clinton.

  • Dyllis Springs design snags top state honor

    Cope Associates won first-place for new school construction in the elementary category at the Tennessee School Boards Association annual convention.

    The architectural firm, which has offices in Knoxville and Nashville, won for its design of Dyllis Springs Elementary School in Roane County.

    “I knew we were going to win when I saw the competition,” Roane County Board of Education Chairman Rob Jago said.

    Dyllis Springs was misspelled on the award, but Jago said he didn't mind.

  • RSCC holiday concert set

    Roane Countians are welcome to get in the festive spirit by joining the Roane State Community College choral and instrumental ensembles in a holiday celebration.

    The college’s annual holiday concert will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 and at 3 p.m. Dec. 9 in the O’Brien Theatre on the college’s main campus in Roane County.

    The Concert Choir, Jazz Band, Celebration Singers, soloists and special guests,  including students from Midtown Elementary School, will perform.

    A $10 donation is suggested.

  • FBI offering Internet Challenge

    Teachers and students are encouraged to take an opportunity to participate in the Safe Online Surfing Internet Challenge.

    The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge is an online educational program that teaches children about Internet safety, in a fun way, using interactive games.

    While competing with other similar-size schools, students in grades 3-8 will be taught to recognize online dangers and how to be safe cyber surfers.
