  • Big changes in TVA response under EPA

    The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's new role overseeing the TVA ash spill cleanup are coming with an independent health study and a renewed sense of urgency.

    The moves were announced at a county long-term recovery board meeting struggling to deal with issues created by the disaster at TVA's Kingston Fossil Plant on Dec. 22, 2008.

    The real spellbinder at the Midtown Drive-in is whether the operation can stay open much longer.

    The audience has largely stayed away this season, so much so the owner and manager are worried about the future.

  • Officials butt heads over need for jail employees, tax increase

    Officials have different opinions about the number of new employees the Roane County Sheriff’s Office needs to operate the new jail.

    The views were expressed last week during a budget committee discussion about the sheriff’s proposed jail budget for the 2009-10 fiscal year.

  • Cawood said sheriff's office violated his rights

    A public apology and $10,000.

    Those are some of the things attorney Chris Cawood asked for in a letter he addressed to Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton.

    The overture stems from Cawood’s arrest at the courthouse last week.

    Cawood represents Constable Mark Patton. The two men entered the courthouse shortly before 9 a.m. May 19 for Patton’s ouster trial.

  • Prepare for county property tax increase

    Aunt Tessy is an imaginary figure Roane County Executive Mike Farmer often invokes when discussing property tax issues.

    She was on his mind again Wednesday.

    “Aunt Tessy is going to have to pay more taxes if this budget’s passed,” Farmer said.

    The county’s budget committee voted 3-1 to approve a request by Sheriff Jack Stockton for 12 additional full-time jailers. The cost for those new positions is $550,243.

  • HEAT may be disbanded in favor of industrial board

    Members of the Harriman Economic Advisory Team may get a new role.

    Harriman Mayor Chris Mason said he would like to see the large committee disbanded and some of its members used as a pilot Harriman Industrial Board.

    Such a move might enable the city to do things it cannot currently, such as offer tax incentives and other breaks for industries interested in Harriman.

    “They don’t have a purpose right now,” Mason said of HEAT members.

  • Respected leader Paul Goldberg has died

    By Terri Likens tlikens@roanecounty.com Paul Goldberg, a longtime Roane Countian whose influence was felt well beyond Roane State Community College where he rose to vice president, has died. Goldberg was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer last year.

  • School-needs plan cut to $32 milion

    Roane County Board of Education reached a unanimous decision on another building plan during a special-called meeting Thursday.

    The price tag is $32 million, $15 million less than what the school board previously asked for.

    It’s still an amount the Roane County Commission may not be willing to fund this year. To do so would require a large property tax increase, one even greater than the nearly 12-cent hike that’s being proposed to run the new jail.

  • Harriman officer out after domestic assault in Kentucky

    A Harriman Police Department sergeant tendered his resignation less than 24 hours after a May 20 altercation in Kentucky landed him in jail.

    Steve Alcorn notified Harriman Police Chief Randy Heidle of his resignation on the evening after the incident that was described as “horrific” by an officer with the arresting law-enforcement agency.

    “He’s no longer an employee,” Heidle confirmed Friday morning.
