  • Rockwood church hit by copper thieves

    Copper thieves are still at it.

    This time, their target was a church.

    The Hwy. 70 Church of Christ in Rockwood was hit by thieves on March 19.

    According to church member Cecil Belcher, the thieves took copper off of the air-conditioning unit.

    Belcher said congregation members were at church for Wednesday night services when they realized the heat wasn’t working inside.

    “So, we went out to investigate,” Belcher said.

  • Village donated to Dawn of Hope

    A Harriman man is sharing a part of Christmas he has kept with him through the years.

    Ronnie Westmoreland has spent years building up his Christmas village, Mountain Harbor, a fictional early 1900s Vermont village he created using popular Christmas structures and figu-rines.

    For Westmoreland, New England represents Christmas.

  • New Midway Baptist Church burns

    An East Roane County church burned overnight Saturday, and several firefighters were in the building when the roof collapsed.

    According to East Roane County Volunteer Fire Company Assistant Chief

    Michael Marney, firefighters received the call at approximately 12:55 a.m. Sunday morning.

    The building was engulfed in flames that rose 50 feet above the roof when they arrived, fire officials said.

    Fire companies from Loudon, Blair and Midtown assisted in extinguishing the blaze.

  • Grateful vets turn out for Davis

    More than 150 residents crowded into the Utopia Cafe in downtown Harriman Wednesday afternoon to meet with U.S. Rep. Lincoln Davis.

    He had a hero’s welcome, thanks to area veterans who came to show their appreciation for the congressman’s successful efforts to fund a veteran’s clinic in Roane County.

    Other residents had another mission on their minds — financial support for the Princess Theater in Harriman.

  • Houston lawyer wrangling continues

    Attorneys Randy Rogers and James Logan showed up at the Roane County Courthouse on Thursday as unwanted men.

    Unwanted, that is, by their clients, Rocky and Leon Houston.

    The brothers, who are each charged with two counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony murder, filed motions to represent themselves.

  • Oil-well fire out

    A Texas team finally extinguished an oil-well fire that evacuated a community near Oliver Springs and burned for nearly a week.

    But anger still burns among residents who, as they prepare to return home, feel they were put in danger.

    On Monday, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Anderson County officials met with residnts in the fellowship hall of a local church.

  • McCartts accepted as third party plaintiffs

    Chancellor Frank V. Williams has signed an order allowing the heirs of Pleas McCartt to become third party plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Morgan County.

    The McCartts asked the Court to allow them to be third party plaintiffs in a case between Mildred and Summer Henry and Morgan County.
