  • Burn permits needed now through May 15

    From Oct. 15 through May 15, anyone doing outdoor burning in Tennessee are required to obtain a free burn permit from the Tennessee Deptartment of Agriculture, Forestry Division.
    Burning without a permit during this time period is a Class C misdemeanor punishable by up to 30 days in jail and/or a $50 fine, as well as suppression costs.
    To obtain a permit, call your local forestry office Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.
    You are responsible for your fire and any damages incurred should it escape, as well as liable for suppression costs.

  • Ferguson sign complaint filed

    Republican State House of Representatives candidate Julia Hurley filed a report with police on Wednesday, alleging she was threatened by her opponent’s relative.
    Greg Ferguson, brother of Democrat state Rep. Dennis Ferguson, denied the claim.  
    “She got a police report because she was told to get a police report,” Greg Ferguson said.
    Kingston Police Lt. Gary Nelson said police received a call to go to the corner of Court and Third streets, which is near the Roane County Courthouse, concerning threats.

  • Early Voting under way

    Early voting for the Nov. 2 election began Wednesday.
    Roane County Administrator of Elections Charles Holiway said the turnout was 378 on the first day.   
    With absentee voting, which he said started 45 days ago, 578 people had voted so far.
    “That’s a good turnout to start,” he said.
    The last day to early vote is Oct. 28.
    Early voting locations are Rockwood Community Center, Harriman Community Center, Roane County Courthouse in Kingston and First Christian Church in Oak Ridge.
