  • Tennessee Sheriff’s Association Scholarship goes to local teen

     

    Roane County High School senior Shayla Butler is the recipient of the 2013 Tennessee Sheriff’s Association Scholarship. Her father, Deputy Rick Butler, presented the $800 check to his daughter with his wife, Vicki, and Sheriff Jack Stockton. Shayla plans on attending Tennessee Tech while pursuing a degree in nursing. The Butler’s son, Kaleb, received the same scholarship in 2012. Kaleb is currently working towards a degree in nursing at Roane State and will transfer to Tennessee Tech with his sister in the fall.

  • THP to conduct April license check in Roane County

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct a driver license roadside safety checkpoint from 6 to 7 p.m. April 19 on Pansy Hill Road near Swan Pond Road.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.

  • Ever wonder how sheriff’s office works?

    The Roane County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for an upcoming citizens academy. Participants will meet every Thursday from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. April 4 through May 30. Topics include drug investigations, patrol, corrections and the judicial system.

    A graduation ceremony for participants will be held.  

    Lt. Rick Baker decribed the academy as a condensed version of what people go through when they’re training to become police officers.

  • THP to conduct March sobriety check in Roane

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct a sobriety roadside safety checkpoint from 11 p.m. to midnight March 15 on Hwy. 70 at Poland Hollow Road.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by intoxicated drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by intoxicated drivers.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found these sobriety checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing DUI laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

  • THP to conduct March license checks in Roane Co.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct three driver license roadside safety checkpoints in March.

    The first will be from 8 to 9 a.m. March 1 on Hwy. 27 at the Morgan County line.

    A second checkpoint will be from 1 to 2 p.m. March 8 on Pine Ridge Road at the railroad tracks.

    The final one will be from 10 to 11 p.m. March 22 on Pansy Hill Road near Swan Pond Road.

  • Officers complete crisis training

    Lt. Maretta McNichol and Capt. Tim Hawn of the Roane County Sheriff’s Office recently graduated with the fourth class of the East Tennessee Crisis Intervention Team training.

    To date, 71 area law enforcement officers have completed the program.

    “Law enforcement agencies in the area are to be commended for the value they place on this program by allowing officers to participate, especially given the shortage of staff in some departments,” said Brian Buuck, chief operating officer at Ridgeview Psychiatric Hospital and Center in Oak

  • Guge, Richardson town’s top cops

    Harriman Police Department’s Cody Guge and reserve officer Ridge Richardson were selected as 2012’s officer and reserve officer of the year, respectively.

    Harriman Police Chief Randy Heidle said Guge has been an asset to the department since he became involved first as an Explorer.

    “In 2009, he was also Explorer of the Year,” Heidle said. “Cody has been through our system since the beginning. He is my very first officer that has went through my whole system.”

  • TBI accepting applications for 2013 Citizens Academy

    Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is now accepting applications for the 2013 TBI Citizens Academy, open to Tennessee residents interested in learning more about the state’s lead investigative law enforcement agency.

    The academy will be May 7-28 at TBI Headquarters in Nashville. Classes will be for three hours every Tuesday evening and one Saturday in May.
