  • THP to conduct January sobriety check in Roane County

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct a sobriety roadside safety checkpoint from 11 p.m. to midnight Jan. 18 on Patton Lane at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by intoxicated drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by intoxicated drivers.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found these sobriety checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing DUI laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

  • THP to conduct December license checks in Roane County

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting two December driver license roadside safety checkpoints in Roane County.

    The first checkpoint will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Dec. 7 on Hwy. 27 at the Morgan County line.

    Another is planned from 10 to 11 a.m. Dec. 14 on Pine Ridge Road at the railroad tracks.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.

  • More than $55,000 in state grants given to sheriff, police departments

    Law-enforcement agencies in Roane County are the recipients of grants totaling $55,600 to be disbursed through the Governor’s Highway Safety Office to promote public safety on Tennessee roads and curb drunk driving.

    Roane County Sheriff’s Office will receive a $15,000 network coordinator grant and $25,600 to administer A Safer Roane County.

    Grants of $5,000 each were awarded to police departments in Harriman, Kingston and Oliver Springs for high visibility law-enforcement campaigns.

  • OS offering free smoke detectors

    Oliver Springs Fire Department is offering free smoke detectors to residents of the town.

    These smoke detectors are made available through the Assistance to Firefighters Grants program of the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The grant’s goal is to meet firefighting and emergency response needs.

  • Harriman fire hydrant flushing to start today

    Harriman Fire Department, in partnership with Harriman Utility Board, will begin flushing fire hydrants throughout the city starting today, Aug. 15.

    The flushing will continue until the process is complete.

    A release from Harriman Fire Department said this process is vital for making sure that the hydrants operate properly during an emergency incident and plays an important part on the city's insurance rating.

    The checkpoint will take place from 11 p.m. to midnight.

  • Student break-in case continuing

    The criminal case pending against Courtney Marie Thomas in Monroe County General Sessions Court was continued last week.

    Thomas, 18, is charged with aggravated burglary.

    She allegedly broke into the Sweetwater home of former Harriman High School boys basketball coach Jeff King.

    Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton said his office is investigating whether King had an inappropriate relationship with Thomas, who attended Harriman.

  • HPD plans National Night Out activities

    Harriman Police Department is calling this year’s National Night Out celebration “a good night to get to know your neighbors and give crime a going-away party.”

  • Child found with 4 adults at meth lab campsite raid

    A Roane County sheriff’s deputy out on patrol Friday discovered a meth lab off Old Elverton Road outside Harriman.

    Four adults and a 6-year-old boy were decontaminated at the scene.

    “EMS transported him to the hospital just for precaution,” Chief Deputy Tim Phillips said. “DCS (Department of Children’s Services) accompanied the ambulance to the hospital.”

    The adults were taken to the Roane County Jail. Phillips said they will face drug charges.

  • Man charged with exposing self at park

    Brendon Seth Luffman had other intentions besides staying cool when he went for a dip in the swimming area at Roane County Park on June 30.

    According to a Roane County Sheriff’s Office incident report, three adults told a deputy they saw Luffman masturbate in the water while watching children swim.  

    “The same three complainants all stated they watched Mr. Luffman then clean his hands and genital area before exiting the water,” the report said.
