  • Norfolk Southern supports Midtown VFD

    The Midtown Volunteer Fire Department recently received $1,000 from Norfolk Southern’s safety discretionary fund.

    On hand for the presentation of the funds are, from left, train master Mike Critchley, CNS supervisor David Browning, track supervisor Greg Carlyle, signal maintainer Robby Thornton and Midtown Volunteer Fire Department Chief Randy Scarborough. 

    “We appreciate this,” Scarborough said. “The money will be spent on safety and training for the guys at the fire department.”

  • THP to conduct license checks in February

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct two driver license roadside safety checkpoints in February in Roane County.

    The THP will have a checkpoint from 5 to 6 p.m. Feb. 4 on Hwy. 58 near the bridge.

    The second checkpoint will be from 9 to 10 p.m. Feb. 18 at Hwy. 70 and Poland Hollow Road.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles operated by drivers who would violate Tennessee driver license laws.

  • THP to conduct license check in Roane County

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting a driver license roadside safety checkpoint from 8 to 10 p.m. Jan. 28 on Hwy. 27 at the Roane/Rhea County line.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.

  • Former county exec candidate tussles with police

    Miles Ledbetter Jr. might have done better in the election had he fought as hard as officers alleged he did on Jan. 6.
    Officers with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office went to his home to arrest him on two outstanding warrants for harassment.
    Ledbetter, who ran for Roane County executive last year, did not go quietly. The arrest report said he broke away from one officer and then punched another in the nose.

  • Four charged in TennCare fraud cases

    At least four Roane County residents have run afoul of TennCare laws since November, according to the Tennessee Office of the Inspector General.
    The latest was Bradley Allen Price.
    The Inspector General’s office said Friday that Price, 34, was charged with TennCare fraud for doctor shopping in Knox County.
    He was also charged with obtaining possession of a controlled substance by fraud.

  • Four charged in meth lab operations

    A strong chemical smell tends to be an obvious sign of meth activity.
    Deputies detected the smell at a home on River Road last Tuesday.
    “We talked to the people there and saw signs and evidence that meth was being cooked and being used,” Roane County Sheriff Jack Stockton said. “We took four people into custody and actually found the components of the lab where they had recently been cooking.”

  • Rockwood woman hurt in fire dies on Christmas Eve

    A 60-year-old Rockwood woman who was injured in a house fire a few weeks ago died on Christmas Eve.

    Firefighters rescued Inez Newman from a home on Trinity Avenue in Rockwood on Dec. 12.

    Rockwood Fire Chief Mike Wertz said on Thursday he was uncertain about the cause of her death.

    He said in initial fire reports that Newman suffered burns and heavy smoke inhalation during the fire.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety roadside safety checkpoints from 9 to 10 p.m. Jan. 1 on U.S. Hwy. 70 at Poland Hollow Road in Roane County.

    Recognizing the danger presented to the public by intoxicated drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by intoxicated drivers.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol has found these sobriety checkpoints to be an effective means of enforcing DUI laws of Tennessee while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

  • THP to conduct sobriety checks in Roane Co.

    The Tennessee Highway Patrol will conduct sobriety roadside safety checkpoints during the week of Dec. 26 on U.S. Hwy. 70 at Poland Hollow Road in Roane County.
    Impaired driving is a serious crime that kills more than 16,000 people and injures 305,000 others every year in the United States.
    Troopers will evaluate drivers for signs of alcohol or drug impairment. They will target those who operate a vehicle while impaired and take corrective actions for other violations observed while ensuring the protection of all motorists.

  • Son threatens to burn dad's home

    A man sought help from authorities on Dec. 15 after his son reportedly poured gas on the house and threatened to burn it down.  

    Deputies with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office responded to the home on 1678 Old Harriman Hwy.

    Dispatch told the Blair Volunteer Fire Department to be on standby “in case it goes bad.” The fire department was later told they could stand down.

    Michael Allen Brown, 34, was arrested and charged with domestic assault, criminal attempt and vandalism.
