The Tennessee Highway Patrol will be conducting driver license roadside safety checkpoints during the week of Dec. 1 on Hwy. 29 (Pine Ridge Road) in Roane County.

Recognizing the danger presented to the public by unqualified drivers, troopers will concentrate their efforts on vehicles being operated by drivers who would violate the driver license laws of Tennessee.

Harriman police caught a man breaking into gas pumps at the Exxon self-service station on Roane Street, where the pumps are enabled to take cash.
William F. Packett, Harriman, was taken into custody.
According to the Harriman Police Department, officers found Packett beating the machine on Sunday, Oct. 3, at 5:44 a.m.
“When we drove into the lot the subject threw the tools down and fled, running on foot toward the high school,” according to the police report.

The Roane County Sheriff’s Office has spots available for its Citizens Law Enforcement Academy.

Over the course of five weeks, participants in the academy will receive classroom and hands-on instruction from area law-enforcement officers.

Topics will include criminal investigations, crime-scene investigations, defensive driving tactics, narcotics and methamphetamine education, K-9 operations and capabilities, firearms training and patrol duties and defensive tactics.
