  • Tire shop damaged by blaze

    Goodyear in downtown Harriman is closed temporarily because of a fire that damaged part of the building in the wee hours Thursday morning.

    Harriman Fire Chief Brad Goss said the fire was contained to the right side of the building.

    “It was around about 4:30 a.m. when we got the page. It was in the office area and storage,” Goss said.

    “It appears to have started in the upstairs like where you have storage,” he added.

  • Gift to go toward rescue vehicle

    Bryan Adams, owner of Tattoos by Bryan of Harriman, recently presented the Harriman Fire Department with a $500 donation.

    The donation was given in support of the department’s fundraising efforts to purchase a four-wheel-drive universal transport vehicle.

    The UTV, a specialized vehicle, is to be used during inclement weather or other extreme rescue situations.

  • Registered sex offender runs afoul of the law

    Another Roane County registered sex offender is in trouble with the law.

    Jasper Lee Russell, 186 Poplar Creek Road, Harriman, was arrested on April 17 on weapons charges.

    His legal troubles may not end there.

    According to court records, Russell is under investigation for an alleged child rape. The court records said an investigator with the Roane County Sheriff’s Office became aware of the allegations against Russell on April 13.

  • Famed Ariz. sheriff holds suspect for Roane

    Roane County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Tim Phillips and Deputy Wes Stooksbury traveled to Phoenix last week.    

    The two lawmen weren’t there to sightsee, however. They went to pick up a prisoner from one of the jails in Maricopa County, Ariz.

    James. A. Tiegs was wanted in Roane County for a sexual offender registration violation and aggravated sexual battery.

    “We flew out Wednesday,” Phillips said. “Stayed the night, got up and went and got our prisoner and flew back.”

  • One of Harriman’s finest hanging up his collar and calling it a career

    Harriman Police Department has gotten a lot of use out of Dugan, the sweet-natured and proficient narcotic dog.

    “He’s been with the police department for about 11 years,” said Police Chief Randy Heidle.

    The department recently retired Dugan and is getting a new $10,000 dog with the help of K9s4Cops, a Texas nonprofit that assists police departments with funding for police dogs.

    Heidle said he knew it was about time to retire Dugan, who was born in 2001.

  • Suspect stunned, pulled from closet

    Zachery Allen Collins managed to elude police on April 2. He wasn’t so lucky last Wednesday.

    According to a Roane County Sheriff’s Office Incident report, officers to went to 937 Post Oak Valley Road to arrest Collins on outstanding warrants for theft, reckless driving, reckless endangerment and evading arrest.

  • Pursuit ends with arrest of man who tried to run over Oak Ridge officer

    A 27-year-old man who allegedly tried to run over an Oak Ridge police officer was arrested on Dec. 20.

    According to a Roane County Sheriff’s Office incident report, Oak Ridge police were in pursuit of a Mazda 626, but lost track of the vehicle near the Kingston city limits.

    A sheriff’s deputy noticed the vehicle while on patrol in Midtown.

    “Oak Ridge advised they had charges on the driver for trying to run over one of their officers,” the report said.

  • Alleged huffer nabbed after leading chase

    A Knoxville man who reportedly led Rockwood police on a chase on Dec. 21 is facing several charges.

    Taylor Lee Helton, of 1651 Chenoweth Road, Knoxville, was charged with evading arrest, DUI, reckless endangerment, driving on a revoked license, aggravated assault on a police officer and inhaling aerosol.

    Rockwood Police Chief Bill Stinnett said the officers involved in the pursuit were OK.

    Rockwood police said they had to use a TASER to get a 24-year-old man to comply with commands on Dec. 19.

  • Woman gets dose of pepper spray

    Rockwood police used pepper spray on a woman on Dec. 18 for not complying with orders, according to a report.

    Jena Lynn Davidson, 30, was charged with DUI, violation of implied consent law, resisting arrest and evading arrest. The report said she also had an outstanding warrant for violation of probation.

    The report said Davidson was hiding in some woods when she was ordered to show her hands.

  • Man accused of sex with 13-year-old

    STAFF REPORTS
    A 23-year-old man accused of a sex crime was arrested on Nov. 20.
    Jeremy Alexander Martin is charged with statutory rape.
    According to court records, he was indicted by the Roane County grand jury on Feb. 22 for having sex with a minor in 2010.
    The alleged victim was 13 at the time.   
    Jail records list Martin’s address as 304 Burkett Road, which is near Rockwood.
    He’s scheduled to appear in court on Dec. 2.
    Martin was also charged with possession of a prohibited weapon.
