  • Candidates look for answers at forum

    Ron Woody has spent years advising county governments how to do business.

    Mike Farmer wanted to know if Woody thought his consultant work qualified him to be Roane County executive.

    “Mr. Woody, you have indicated that you have the best experience,” Farmer asked during a candidates forum on Thursday.

    “Is it your position, then, that advising somebody how to do a job is better than actually doing the job yourself?”

  • Kingston undefeated in 8A tournament play

    The Kingston All-Stars was the only undefeated Roane County club as the Dixie Youth District 8 single-A tournament drew to a close in its second day of play Saturday.

    Kingston picked up a 19-7 win over Harriman Saturday in Rockwood. 

    Harriman walked away from Saturday play with a 1-1 record after taking an 18-10 morning win over Rockwood.

    Saturday’s stats showed Rockwood with a 0-3 tournament record.

  • Kingston dedicates pavilion to employees

    It was a classic Willie Gordon comment.

    After a glowing commendation from Kingston Mayor Troy Beets for fire chief’s leading role in building the new pavilion at City Park, Beets declared that the kitchen will forever be known as the Willie Gordon Kitchen.

    “At least it’s not the bathroom,” Gordon drawled in response.

    The pavilion was opened and dedicated at ceremonies Friday that were tied in with the annual Kingston city employees annual picnic.

  • Bumper marijuana plant crop eradicated in Roane County

    Instead of winding up on the streets, somebody’s yield of marijuana ended up in the hands of authorities on Tuesday.

    “I would say that we made it a bad day for a pot grower in Tennessee,” TBI Special Agent in Charge T.J. Jordan said.

    Jordan oversees the Governor’s Task Force on Marijuana Eradication. The task force discovered approximately 2,100 marijuana plants in a secluded area South of the River.

  • Kingston A All Stars headed to state tourney

    The Dixie Youth District 8A tournament in Rockwood finished up Tuesday, with Sweetwater and Kingston qualifying for the state tournament next week in Jackson.

    Sweetwater knocked off Harriman 21-6 Tuesday to finish first in the tourney with a 4-0 record.

    Kingston would take second place following a 20-5 win over Rockwood in the tournament’s final game.

    Kingston had a 3-1 tourney record, losing only to Sweetwater Monday night.

  • Kingston, Harriman advance in Dixie Youth action

    A 24-hour delay for bad weather was the only thing that slowed the Harriman and Kingston AA All-Stars earlier this week as Kingston finished first and Harriman second in the Dixie Youth AA sub district tournament played in Caryville.

    Kingston won the tournament, finishing a perfect 4-0 in round robin play.

  • Harriman wants more from county

    Harriman Councilman J.D. Sampson isn’t afraid to ask for more.

    He wants to ask the county to fund three police officer and three firefighter positions, and proposed as much at a recent Harriman City Council workshop.

    “We don’t get nearly enough for our county taxes,” Sampson said.

    “That sounds like metro government, J.D.,” Harriman Mayor Chris Mason said.

    Sampson disagreed.

  • County debates pay raise

    Members of the county budget committee have expressed support for a boost in pay for employees.

    “I wish that we could give our employees a salary increase,” County Executive Mike Farmer said.

    Budget director Alva Moore said a 1-percent raise would cost about $103,000.

    Employees were in line to get a 1-percent raise last year, but it was taken out of the budget at the last minute.
