     Despite leading 10-7 at halftime, the Rockwood Tigers couldn’t overcome a powerful Greenback Cherokees ground game and fell to the ‘Kees, 17-10, Friday night at Cooper Field in Greenback.

  • Bobcats slam Eagles, 41-0

    The Oliver Springs Bobcats ran their season record to 2-0 Friday night with an impressive 41-0 victory over visiting Oakdale in a District 4-A contest at D.J. Brittan Field.

    Friday's performance wasn't perfect according to Oliver Springs head coach Wiley Brackett, but the Bobcats did amass 314 yards of total offense while holding the Eagles to -2 yards on the night.

  • Kingston knocks off Highlanders, 21-12

    It might only be the first week of September, but the Kingston Yellow Jackets picked up a huge District 4-AA win Friday night with a 21-12 victory over Scott High at Dr. Nat Sugarman Memorial Field.

    Friday's win was anything but easy as the Jackets had to overcome a high-powered Highlander offense that rolled up 412 yards of total offense.

  • New county officers sworn in

    The Circuit Courtroom at the Roane County Courthouse was packed with family, friends, county employees and officials on Wednesday.
    The occasion that brought people out was the swearing-in ceremony for officials who were elected in August.
    “I was sweating all over,” Sheriff Jack Stockton joked. “I didn’t know if (Ron) Woody was swearing me in or if I was swearing him in.”
    Woody, the new county executive, was the first to be sworn in, with Sessions Court Judge Jeff Wicks doing the honors.

  • LOOSELEAF LAUREATE: Imagine being a child with no solid footing

    I once worked at a Midwest newspaper with a young woman named Betsy. She was gentle and exceptionally shy for a reporter.
    After I had gotten to know her better, she told me she had grown up in the foster system. Suddenly I understood her unsureness and mannerisms — the way she protectively held her hand in front of her mouth when she spoke.
    We never talked in detail about her life in foster care, but I feel sure some of her experiences were not good ones.

  • McFarland vs. Kirkham — again

    Roane County Property Assessor Teresa Kirkham is livid over a letter sent to her by County Attorney Tom McFarland.
    The letter, dated Sept. 1, said Kirkham is out of line by requesting raises for the five-member County Board of Equalization.
    “Taking actions that may be construed as improperly influencing the Board of Equalization to uphold her reappraisal numbers is improper, if not illegal,” McFarland said.
    Kirkham said McFarland should be ashamed of himself.

  • Horse club organizing

    A Roane County 4-H Horse Club is organizing.
    An informational meeting will start at 7 p.m. Sept. 7 on the third floor of Roane County Courthouse, Kingston.
    The club is open to horse enthusiasts in grades 4-12; meetings are twice a month on Tuesdays.

    Ridge View Elementary School, Rockwood, is making plans for a “Come Help Refresh Ridge View!” community workday.
    The event will begin at 9 a.m. Sept. 11 at the school at 625 Pumphouse Road.
