  • When it comes to census, we all add up

    The amount of federal dollars Roane County receives this decade could depend on how strongly residents participate in the 2010 Census. The questionnaires are being mailed out this month.

    “It’s important for funding,” Roane County Executive Mike Farmer said. “Every grant that we apply for — most all grants that we apply for — comes back to census data.”

    Economic development also depends a lot on census data.

  • Rather leads Bobcats past Harriman, 56-47

    The Region 2-A championship game turned into the Wesley Rather Show Thursday night as the Oliver Springs' senior guard torched the Harriman Blue Devils defense for five three-pointers and 28 points in leading the Bobcats to 56-47 victory.

    "I was feeling good one I got going tonight," Rather said following the game. "It's been 12 years since Oliver Springs had been to a region championship game, but I told our guys before the game we would get it if we just stayed focused and played hard."

  • Double jeopardy bars Rocky Houston retrial, appeals court rules

    If you improperly release a jury, you release a defendant. Defense attorney Randy Rogers argued this point before the Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals on behalf of Rocky Houston last November.

    The appeals court agreed with Rogers, this week finding that Special Judge James “Buddy” Scott improperly discharged the jury in Houston’s murder trial.

  • Property tax reappraisals coming

    Property owners can expect to get a reappraisal notice sometime this spring.

    Roane County Property Assessor Teresa Kirkham said her office is in the process of reappraising every parcel in the county.   

    “The reappraisal is near completion,” she said.

    Kirkham said the notices will have a phone number people can call to get an explanation if they have questions about their appraisal.

  • Late runs sends OS to title game

    One small adjustment made a world of difference Wednesday night for the Oliver Springs Bobcats as Tony Ingram's squad knocked off Tellico Plains 44-32 to advance to the Region 2-A Tournament championship game against Harriman.

    Trailing 28-25, Bobcat head coach Tony Ingram told his defense to extend their packed-in zone on the perimeter to see if that could rattle the Bears and jump start the offense. The move worked as Oliver Springs responded with an 18-1 run that erased the deficit and put the game away.

  • Lawyer, Houston had own clashes

    As an aspiring attorney in the 1970s, Randy Rogers said he was involved with an appellate case known as Kersey v. State.

    Kersey was one of several pieces of case law cited in the Court of Criminal Appeals’ opinion in the Rocky Houston case.

    After dropping a pair of close games to the Tellico Plains in the regular season, the Blue Devils got their revenge with a 57-43 victory over the Bears in the District 3-A title game at Rockwood.

    A fabulous postseason run came to a disappointing end Monday night for the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats as Michelle Christopher's squad dropped a heartbreaking 52-50 decision at the hands of Coalfield in the Region 2-A Tournament semifinals played at Wartburg.
