  • Lincoln Memorial University white coat ceremony: spring 2013

    Suzanne Alice Alley of Kingston recently received her white coat at the physician assistant program class of 2014 white-coat ceremony at Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine in Harrogate.

    Alley is a second-year physician assistant student at LMU.

    The white-coat ceremony is a standard ritual in physician assistant programs, allopathic and osteopathic medical schools across the country. It is a public demonstration of a student’s commitment to patient care and professionalism.

  • Carson-Newman to offer its first doctoral degree

    Carson-Newman University this fall will offer its first doctoral degree and a new graduate degree option for those in the field of education.

    The new Doctor in Educational Leadership degree and the Educational Specialist degree build upon Carson-Newman’s Master of Arts in teaching and Master of Education degrees.

    “Carson-Newman is proud to be a doctoral degree-granting institution,” said Kina Mallard, executive vice president and provost of the Jefferson City-based university.

  • Kingston students do well in math contest

    One hundred seventy-seven students from Kingston Elementary School, led by Esther Lancaster, math coach, recently competed in Noetic Learning Math Contest.

    Noetic Learning Math Contest is an elementary math problem-solving contest held twice a year. A total of 19,831 students representing 990 teams across the country participated.

    Winners of their teams were:

    Second grade — James Vermillion and Cara Randolph.

    Third grade — Caleb Tejeda.

    Wesley Flatt of Oliver Springs has been accepted to attend Union College this fall.

    Union is in Barbourville, Ky.

    Harriman’s dreams of reaching the Dixie Youth AA State Tournament ended Tuesday evening, as the Blue Devils dropped a 12-8 decision to Sweetwater in the District 8 AA Tournament at Greenback.

  • Jackets earn state tourney berth

    The Kingston A All-Stars earned a berth in next week’s Dixie Youth A State Tournament following a second place finish in the Dixie Youth District 8 A Tournament that concluded Tuesday evening in Tellico Plains.
    Kingston secured their berth on Sunday with a 21-15 victory over Rockwood to improve to 3-0 in the tourney. On Tuesday, the Jackets took on Sweetwater for the district title, but it would be the Wildcats coming away with a 21-15 victory.

  • Kingston fireworks postponed until July 13

    Kingston fireworks have been postponed until Saturday, July 13.

    Though attempts were made to have other events, such as the raft race and watermelon-eating contest, torrential Fourth of July rains forced those to also be postponed until July 13.

    Boat races have to finish today, said Joyce Lewis, executive assistant with the Kingston City Manage's Office.

    "Will try to happen on schedule, but may happen when any breaks in rain occur," she said. "Water needs to be as calm as possible for them to race."

    Wednesday night's Fourth of July parade in Kingston has been canceled due to rain.

    According to Kingston officials, a decision on the Fourth of July fireworks display will be made at a 7 a.m. meeting Thursday.
