  • Troops back home after Mideast tour

    A heartwarming glow of love and patriotism enveloped the Rockwood National Guard Armory Thursday night.

    It started building as the families of the 278th Armored Calvary Regiment Troop H, known as Hammer Troop, were bubbling over with excitement as they prepared for the bus carrying the troops to arrive at the armory, which they decked out in red, white and blue.

  • Roane County News wins top honor, 11 awards

    The Roane County News garnered a whopping 11 Tennessee Press Association awards at the 2010  summer convention last week, including one of the top honors — the prestigious Edward J. Meeman award for public service.

    Roane County News' first place in the public service category involved the newspaper’s work on the TVA disaster at the Kingston Fossil Plant.

    It included stories and editorials by editor Terri Likens and stories by reporter Damon Lawrence.

  • AAA Jackets headed to state

    It wasn’t easy, but the Kingston AAA All-Stars earned a spot in next week’s Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament with a second place finish in the Dixie Youth District 8 AAA Tournament that concluded Wednesday in Harriman.

    Kingston finished the three-game round robin tournament with a 2-1 record and that was one game behind tournament champion Tellico Plains. The Jackets lost their tournament opener 5-1 against Tellico Plains om Saturday, but Kingston bounced back Tuesday with an 8-0 victory over Spring City.

  • Rockwood regiment home from Iraq

    More members of the National Guard’s 278th Armored Cavalry Regiment are getting some time at home.

    The group, members of the 278th's H Troop, returned to the Rockwood National Guard Armory a little after 8 p.m. Thursday.

    Flags and a large banner saying “Welcome Home 278th” awaited them on Rockwood Street.

    Kelly Gibson of Rockwood Merchants Association said the soldiers’ families didn’t even know a definite return day until Tuesday.

  • Late court becoming norm for hefty caseloads

    One day continues to stand out from others at the Roane County Courthouse.

    “Mondays are getting horrible,” General Sessions Court Judge Dennis Humphrey said.

    That was evident last week. Humphrey’s courtroom also serves as the meeting place for the Roane County Commission. He was still holding court when commissioners showed up for their 7 p.m. meeting, so officials stood out in the hallway.

  • TVA trucks rankle residents again

    A misunderstanding or an about-face on a promise.

    That issue came up last week between TVA and some residents in Swan Pond.  

    TVA is doing utility work in the area, and residents said that led to heavy truck traffic on Swan Pond Circle past Swan Harbour subdivision.

    “The problem we’re having is they promised us they would not bring truck traffic this way,” resident Andy Avel said.

  • Mystery truck nearly kills man

    The family of James Kirkland said he’s spent the last few weeks in the hospital.

    Someone else is responsible for putting him there, they said, but finding that person has proven difficult so far.

    According to a Tennessee Highway Patrol crash report, Kirkland was traveling east on Harriman Hwy. on June 30 when another vehicle, described as a log truck, crossed the center line and struck his left side mirror.

  • Harriman AA team earns state berth in three-way tiebreaker playoffs

    The Harriman AA All-Stars survived a two-game tiebreaker playoff Wednesday for a place in the Dixie Youth state tournament next week in Jackson.

    Harriman took home second place by first eliminating Kingston 13-9 then claiming a 16-8 win over Rockwood.

    Madisonville won first place in the District AA tournament after the regular schedule of games were completed Tuesday in Rockwood.

    Harriman will play its first game next Thursday in the state tournament.

  • Miss Roxie, 107-year-old Rockwood columnist, dies

    One of Roane County’s most beloved figures, 107-year-old “Miss Roxie” McClendon of Rockwood, died Tuesday morning.

    As the author of the “Eureka” column for The Rockwood Times, she was one of the oldest newspaper columnists in the world.

    “She had the most peaceful, natural death,” Tina Crisp said of her grand-aunt.

  • Dead dog owner takes settlement from groomer, but threatens to picket

    The civil matter between Regina Sutton and Lorri Case was settled in court.

    However, the feud may not be over.

    Sutton said she plans to protest outside L.A. Paws, Case’s pet- grooming business on Gateway Avenue in Rockwood, on Saturday.

    “I’m going to do everything I can to put her out of business,” Sutton said.

    Sutton’s dog, a 3-year-old schnauzer named Brunswick, died at L.A. Paws on June 11.

    “She killed my dog,” Sutton said.
