  • Ruritan Road work to begin

    The Tennessee Department of Transportation is looking at a spring 2011 starting date for constrution to widen Harriman’s Ruritan Road from Pine Ridge Road to Roane Street.

    A crowd gathered last week in Bowers Elementary School to hear more about the widening project, which will encompass a stretch of roadway of less than a mile.

  • Patton may cut deal on criminal charges

    Former constable Mark Patton could be on the verge of accepting a plea deal in his criminal cases.

    “No deal has been signed,” Patton attorney Chris Cawood said. “We’re trying to negotiate.”

    Patton was indicted in February on two counts of reckless endangerment and one count of official misconduct.

  • Courthouse evacuated over 'irregularities'

    The Roane County Courthouse was evacuated Monday morning for what Sheriff Jack Stockton said were precautionary reasons.

    “We found some unsecured doors to the courthouse,” Stockton said.

    Stockton said some suspicious wiring also contributed to the evacuation.

    A detection dog was brought in to search for explosives. None were found.

    The courthouse was opened for normal business after officers determined everything was safe.

  • Three vie for Hooks' open seat

    Three people expressed interest in the District 1 open commission seat during a public hearing at the Roane County Courthouse on Tuesday.

    Ron Berry, Robert Myers and Bill Wright made up the trio.

    “One thing I’ve always felt more important than others is as a member of this commission, it’s true that you represent your district,” Berry said. “But you also primarily represent this county.”

  • Controversial TVA shoreline program dropped

    The TVA board terminated the agency’s maintain-and-gain program at its Aug. 20 board meeting.

    The program allowed property owners to trade water-access rights with TVA.

    It came under scrutiny for a deal involving North Carolina Congressman Heath Shuler.

    The former University of Tennessee quarterback served on a congressional committee that had oversight authority over TVA.

  • Cyclist killed on Gallaher loved to ride

    Mary Daugherty got the visit that no wife ever wants.

    Police showed up at her residence to tell her that her husband wasn’t coming home.

    John Daugherty was riding a bicycle on Gallaher Road in Kingston on Tuesday when he was struck by a Toyota Tacoma and killed around 7 p.m.

    The impact left pieces of Daugherty’s bike strewn along the roadway.

    “He was pronounced dead on the scene,” Kingston Police Chief Jim Washam said.

  • Cawood dodges another complaint

    The Board of Professional Responsibility failed to convince a hearing panel that Kingston attorney Chris Cawood violated rules of professional conduct.

    The board couldn’t convince Judge Jon Kerry Blackwood, either.

    “Having reviewed the entire record, the court agrees with the findings and conclusions of the hearing panel that there were no violations of the rules of professional conduct,” Blackwood wrote in his ruling.

  • Disaster recovery committee on the wane

    The county long term recovery committee went from meeting every week to every other week. Now it won’t meet again until Oct. 7.

    Only six members showed up at last week’s meeting — not enough for a quorum.

    Roane County Executive Mike Farmer formed the group after last December’s fly ash catastrophe at TVA’s Kingston Fossil Plant.

  • New hope for old paper mill?

    The idea of utilizing the property of the former American Kraft Mills paper mill property in Harriman is gaining new life.

    Harriman Councilman Buddy Holley has been seeking grant money for the property, and he told the council recently he has found a couple of grants that might be available.

    “They are for brownfield sites,” Holley said.
