  • Harriman drills Jellico, 33-0

    After opening the season with four straight games decided by seven points or less, the Harriman Blue Devils finally had a breather Monday night as Travis Tapp's squad picked up a 33-0 victory over Jellico at Wallace Black Field.

    Harriman was dominant on both sides of the ball Monday as the Blue Devils amassed 404 yards of total offense on 61 plays while allowing Jellico only 46 total yards. About the only thing that stood between the Devils and a perfect night was three fumbles inside Jellico territory.

  • Bobcats top Midway, 24-13

    It was student vs. teacher at Oliver Springs' D.J. Brittan Field Friday night and on this night the student came out on top as Wiley Brackett's Oliver Springs Bobcats topped Craig Moser's Midway Green Wave, 24-13.

    For Brackett, Friday's victory was special as he started his coaching career at Midway and he has a lot of respect for his friend and counterpart on Friday.

  • Kingston wins in OT, 14-13

    Wide left!

    That's what fans of the Lenoir City Panthers will remember about their Thursday night trip to Kingston as the Panthers missed a field goal near the end of regulation that would have won the game and then the Panthers missed an extra point at the end of overtime that allowed Kingston to celebrate a homecoming victory, 14-13.

    Both kicks sailed wide left.

  • $43 million from TVA a good start

    No, TVA can’t fix all the harm it has done with the disastrous ash spill late last year.

    But its $43 million reparations package is a huge step forward.

    We also agree with officials that most of the money should be pumped into improving Roane County schools — then, perhaps, used for recreation opportunities for residents.

    And by recreation opportunities, we are not talking about league sports and ball fields, but biking trails and other opportunities for the exercise and amusement for residents of all ages.

  • Jackets, Panthers battle tonight

    Roane County football fans have dried out after a soggy week four and will hopefully have a dry week five as all five county teams will be in action.

    And just like last week, Roane County's football fans will get a chance to see two games this week. Last week, Harriman played at home Thursday against Greenback and this Thursday Kingston will play at home against Lenoir City.

  • Bobcats wipe out Coalfield, 48-2

    One week after suffering their first loss of the season, the Oliver Springs Bobcats bounced back in a big way Friday night as Wiley Brackett's squad rolled to a 48-2 victory over Coalfield at D.J. Brittan Field.

    “We had a great week of practice and we played hard tonight.” Oliver Springs head coach Wiley Brackett said following the game. “We got down early, but we didn't drop our heads. We kept playing hard and eventually got things going our way.”

    Recently we learned of a discussion involving a handful of local officials who were complaining that the newspaper hasn’t been “nice” to them.

    We are surprised when we see experienced people in office who feel that “being nice” is our role in covering them.

    Our role is not to be nice or mean — although we certainly try to be fair and civil.

  • Harriman tops Greenback, 20-18

    When Greenback held an 18-14 lead and converted a short fourth down with three minutes left to play Thursday night at Harriman it looked like the only way the Devils would knock off the Cherokees was with a miracle. That miracle happened one play later as Harriman's Tyler Morris recovered a Greenback fumble that set the stage for a four-play, 15-yard scoring drive capped by a Dimitrique Inman two-yard run with 1:18 left to play to give the Devils a 20-18 victory.

  • District battles take center stage

    Friday night is another big night for area high school football teams as most teams in the area will play their second district game of the season.

    All five teams from Roane County will be playing district games this week. Harriman opened play a day early by hosting Greenback Thursday in a District 3-A contest. Midway and Rockwood will also take on District 3-A opponents as the Green Wave will be hosting Grace Christian while the Tigers will travel to Tellico Plains.

  • Rockwood tops Kingston, 21-14

    The Kingston Yellow Jackets have been playing with fire to start the 2009 football season and Friday night they got burned.

    In opening the season with two victories over Harriman and Scott, the Jackets waited until their final snap on offense to score game-winning touchdowns, but there would be no magic at Rockwood as the Tigers scored the game-winning touchdown with 9:34 remaining to pick up a 21-14 victory over their county rivals.
