    If you are reading this and the world hasn’t come to a fiery end (as per Mayan calendar hoopla), then I can safely say 2012 has been a great year.


    I have been touched by the many people who have told me they enjoy reading this column, and who “travel” with me on my adventures.

  • Large meth lab found near Rockwood

    Roane County Sheriff’s Deputy Brandon Smith found a massive meth-lab in some woods near Rockwood.


    Initially, Smith found 250 pounds of anhydrous ammonia, a methamphetimine ingredient. According to a news release, Deputies Mark Steinmann and Mitch Grigsby and Roane County Emergency Management Agency personnel also responded.


    An anhydrous ammonia lab was found in a large tent, camouflaged with black plastic and brush.

  • Burchfield, Vann named top RSCC alumni

    A decorated law enforcement officer and an accomplished scholar have been named Roane State Community College’s 2012 Outstanding Alumni.

    The recipients are Jeff Burchfield of Maryville, captain and training supervisor for the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, and Dr. Barry Vann of Corbin, Ky., professor of higher education and geography at the University of the Cumberlands.

    Burchfield graduated from Roane State in 1993 with an associate’s degree in police technology.

  • Students can build a bridge, win big bucks

    Roane County students can experience what it is like to be an engineer by using math, science and technology to design real structures for the 2013 East Tennessee Regional Model Bridge Building Contest.

    The March 9 contest in the American Museum of Science and Energy, Oak Ridge, is open to middle and high school students.

  • Bryan College graduates: Fall 2012

    Steven Alexander of Rockwood graduated from Bryan College earlier this month.

    He was among 144 graduates receiving their degrees during fall commencement.

    Alexander received the Master of Business Administration degree.

    Bryan College is in Dayton.

  • Coastal Carolina University admissions: Fall 2012

    Jared Breazeale of Rockwood has been accepted at Coastal Carolina University for the fall 2013 semester.

    Breazeale, a Rockwood High School student, plans to major in exercise and sport science.

    Coastal Carolina University is in Conway, S.C.

  • Savannah College of Art and Design dean's list: Fall 2013

    Marinda Thomas of Harriman earned placement on the dean’s list at Savannah College of Art and Design for fall quarter.

    Full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or above for the quarter receive recognition on the Dean’s List.

    Savannah College of Art and Design is in Savannah, Ga.
     

  • Tennessee Wesleyan College graduates: Fall 2012

    Amber Cofer of Rockwood received her degree during Tennessee Wesleyan College’s first winter commencement earlier this month.

    “This is a celebration of the achievements of our new graduates,” said Tennessee Wesleyan College President Harley Knowles.

    “In our 155th year of service as an educational leader in Southeast Tennessee, we are celebrating our first winter commencement,” he added. “This is a milestone for the college, as well as a milestone for our new graduates.”
